CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
Taryn Vanderpool scored a career-high 39.025 in the all-around and the Southeast gymnastics team captured three event titles while scoring 192.875 against Illinois State on Friday night.

ISU claimed the dual meet with a score of 193.425 as Southeast counted two falls for the evening.

“I would like our scores to be a little higher than they are at this point,” Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. “However, our performances have positives every meet and we hope the scores will come with that. I was pleased with some of our lineup changes, but we had some uncharacteristic mistakes from some of our upper classmen, which was a little disappointing.”

Southeast's last three gymnasts closed out vault strong as Vanderpool and Emma Garrett matched each other with second-place 9.775 scores and Megan Fosnow closed out the vault with a 9.750. The Redhawks did count a fall in the first rotation which led to a 47.950 team score. ISU scored 48.850 on bars to open up an early lead.

The Redhawks moved onto bars, where they notched a season-best 48.700 in the second rotation. Southeast got a season-high 9.850 from Vanderpool, which was good for first place. Taylor Penzien and Fosnow both tallied a 9.775 while Kimberly Pickerl scored 9.700. Southeast's total gained ground in the team standings as ISU scored 48.500 on vault.

Vanderpool led Southeast with a second-place score of 9.725 on beam during the third rotation. The Redhawks gained ground in the team score with a 47.600 while the Redbirds finished floor with a 47.525.

Southeast's evening concluded on the floor exercise and it posted a season-high 48.600 as four gymnasts scored 9.700 or higher. Garrett's 9.800 won the event while Penzien tied for third with a 9.725. Taylor Westrick and Erin Brady each scored 9.700 as well, though the Redbirds finished off with a 48.450 to finish ahead in the team standings.

“Emma has been limited in practice recently due to injury, so she hasn't had a lot of work in practice,” Ewasko said. “She showed tonight that she can still excel even with a lighter load in practice.”

Vanderpool's two event titles on Friday night give her nine first-place finishes this season. She has scored at least 38.800 in the all-around in four of six meets and scored above 39.000 for the first time in her career.

“Nothing really surprises me with Taryn right now,” Ewasko said. “She's made positive changes and wants to have a successful season. I am very proud of the effort that she is putting in.”

Southeast faces Illinois State again on Feb. 24, with this meeting in Normal, Ill.
