About UT Martin – The defending OVC Champion Skyhawks have had a rough go of late, dropping three of their last four games to drop to 6-5 in OVC play (t-sixth). Those three losses have come by a total of eight points. UT Martin leads the OVC in scoring offense (71.8 points/game) thanks to Heather Butler (21.8 points/game) and Jasmine Newsome (21.0 points/game), the league's top two scorers. Those two make up nearly 60 percent of UTM's offense. Conversely, UTM is 10th in the conference in scoring defense (68.8 points against/game) and 11th in the league in rebounding margin (-7.3 rebounds/game).
Last Meeting – UT Martin closed the first meeting this season on a 10-0 run after nursing a 72-71 lead with a minute and a half remaining. After
Allyson Bradshaw's three cut the deficit to a single point,
Jordan Hunter jumped an inbound pass and had a layup attempt that just rolled off the rim, which would have put the Redhawks in front in the final two minutes. Five Southeast players scored in double figures, with Bradshaw,
Brittany Harriel and
Olivia Hackmann scoring 13 apiece and
Kara Wright and
Bailie Roberts both chipping in 10 points. Southeast held a 28-27 lead at halftime and led by as much as five in the second half before ultimately falling to UTM.
With a win, Southeast would…
•Win its most OVC games since the 2008-09 season.
•Snap a seven-game losing streak to UT Martin.
•Win in Martin, Tenn., for the first time since Jan. 22, 2009 (62-54).
•Win two-straight games for the first time since winning three straight from Jan. 5-9.
•Win consecutive road games for the first time since the 2009-10 season (at Eastern Kentucky, Jan. 16; at Jacksonville State, Jan. 28).
Southeast Trends
•
Bailie Roberts has scored in double figures in 11 of the last 14 games.
•
Kara Wright is averaging 12.3 points on 45.6 percent shooting in her last six games.
•Southeast's last six losses to UT Martin have been by double digits.
•
Jordan Hunter has dished out three or more assists in four of the last five games.
Wright Coming On – Freshman guard
Kara Wright has shown growth in the last few weeks, averaging 12.3 points per game in her past six contests. The Louisville, Ky., native was a three-star recruit out of DePont Manual HS and has shown why she was so highly regarded with three huge games recently. She erupted for 22 points in a Jan. 28 game at SIU Edwardsville and outdid that with 23 points at Austin Peay on Feb. 4. Two games later, Wright again scored 20 in a win over SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 11. Wright is the first Southeast freshman to score 20 points in a game since Tarina Nixon scored 21 at Jacksonville State on Dec. 20, 2005.
Impressive Individuals – Kara Wright's outburst against SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 11 was the freshman's third 20-point game of the season and the sixth such performance by a Southeast player this season.
Bailie Roberts has two games of at least 20 points, tallying 22 against Murray State on Jan. 7 and 20 vs. Morehead State on Jan. 21.
Jordan Hunter also has a 21-point outing to her credit, which came against Austin Peay on Jan. 5. Before this season, Southeast only had a 20-point scorer twice (
Brittany Harriel both times) in the previous three seasons, encompassing a span of 86 games.
Bench Production – The Southeast bench has been a nice weapon this season, getting 16.8 points per game off the pine. Reserves have a knack for being a wild card to wins as the Redhawk bench averages nearly 20 points (19.7) per game in their 10 victories. Southeast has gotten 20 or more bench points in nine games this season.
The Stretch Run – Southeast needs to get on a roll in the final four games of its season to qualify for the OVC Tournament next month. The Redhawks sit 10th in the league standings with a 4-8 conference record and only the top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the OVC Tournament. The Redhawks are two games behind current eight seed SIU Edwardsville, who they split the head-to-head series against this year. Three of the Redhawks' remaining four games are against teams with a .500 or better record in the conference. Southeast also needs to win more on the road, where they are 2-10 this season, as it has three road games left on the docket, two of which are against teams that are above .500 in league play.
