BOISE, Idaho – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team was on pace for a season-high score halfway through its meet at No. 16 Boise State, but a rough final rotation held down the final total in a 196.300-191.325 dual setback on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's score is a season-low for the Redhawks, who are now 2-3 in dual competition this season.
Southeast's afternoon began on bars, where it finished with a total of 48.400.
Taryn Vanderpool's 9.800, her fourth 9.800 on bars in five meets this year, was good for a second-place tie on the apparatus. Meanwhile,
Taylor Penzien and
Megan Fosnow each tallied matching 9.700 scores. The Broncos opened with a 49.325 on vault.
The Redhawks moved onto vault, where they tallied a season-best 48.700 on vault, led by Kimberly Pickerl's career-high 9.800. Fosnow (9.775), Vanderpool (9.750) and
Emma Garrett (9.750) built on that performance by scoring 9.750 or better and the Redhawks' lowest counted score was a 9.625. BSU continued building on its lead with a 48.950 on bars, but the Redhawks were at a score of 97.100 through two rotations, on pace for a score above 194 for the first time this year.
"I was very pleased with where we were in the first two rotations," Southeast head coach
Kristi Ewasko said. "We got scores that we felt we were capable of all year and that's something we'll feed off of going into next week. We had an early fall on floor and I think we felt a little pressure after that and never really got back on track. Then we fell on beam early on and things kind of snowballed from there. I felt this was a mental issue instead of a physical problem on the beam and we'll work to correct that in practice."
From there, Southeast moved to the floor exercise, where it was led by a season-best 9.800 from
Taylor Westrick. Vanderpool posted a 9.750 and Garrett recorded a 9.700 as the Redhawks finished with a 48.000 team total, moving them slightly behind the previous pace. Meanwhile, the Broncos finished beam with a 48.525.
With a chance to set a season-high score in reach, Southeast counted multiple falls on beam to finish with a season-low 46.225. Westrick's third-place score of 9.700 was the highest for the Redhawks in the final rotation. The Broncos tallied a 49.500 on floor to secure the dual win.
Vanderpool finished second in the all-around with a 38.450 while Fosnow (37.875) and Pickerl (37.650) also competed in the all-around for the Redhawks.
Southeast returns home to Houck Field House against Midwest Independent Conference foe Illinois State on Friday. First rotation is at 6:30 p.m.
