Redhawks Open Season with 76-64 Victory over Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Southeast Missouri women's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2013-14 season with a 12-point victory over Alabama A&M (0-1), 76-64.
 
"I am very pleased with the way we played tonight," said head coach Ty Margenthaler. "It was a tough environment to play in but we did an excellent job maintaining our game and focusing on the little things on the way to a victory. Tonight was an excellent example of a 'team effort' with so many players contributing."
 
AAMU came out with five-straight points to begin the game. The first ten minutes of the game saw the score tied three times and the lead change nine times. With the Bulldogs up 24-23, Jordan Hunter completed a layup with take a one-point lead with 9:03 left in the first.
 
Southeast never trailed again in the game.
 
At the half, Southeast led the Bulldogs 44-37. Hunter led Southeast offensively with seven points in the first as she shot 3-of-6 from the field and made both attempted three-pointers and a team-leading five rebounds in the first half. Allyson Bradshaw, Brittany Harris, and Olivia Hackmann all tallied six points in the half.
 
Southeast found its largest lead at 4:43 left in the game when Hunter drained a three-pointer to take a 14-point lead in the season opener.
 
In the second half, Hunter added 11 to finish with a game-high 18 points against the Bulldogs. Hunter finished 6-of-10 from the field, 2-of-3 in three-point attempts, and 4-of-5 at the free-throw line.
 
Hackmann also added six more points for 12 total points off the bench for Southeast. The Southeast Missouri bench combined for 37 points. Hillary Lively finished the contest with eight points while Brianna Mitchell, Kenyada Brown, and Harris each added six points apiece.
 
Patricia Mack found herself in foul trouble but still managed to tally eight rebounds; three offensive, five defensive.
 
Margenthaler added, "We have a real challenge on our hands with Bradley coming to town Monday. We need to play great defense and play at our tempo."
 
Southeast will open the 2013-14 home schedule against Bradley, Monday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
