CAPE GRIARDEAU, Mo. – Powered by four players in double-figure scoring, the Southeast Missouri women's basketball team defeated Kansas City 76-74 Thursday night at the Show Me Center.

The Redhawks improve to 2-1 on the young season while UMKC falls to 0-2.

"That was a great women's basketball game tonight," Southeast head coach
Ty Margenthaler said. "I was proud of the effort that the kids gave."

Kansas City opened the game gaining a 6-2 lead before a 19-5 run gave the Redhawks a 21-11 advantage with 11:08 remaining in the first half.

After a quick timeout by Margenthaler to regroup after the fast UMKC start, the Redhawks began its run on a jumper from Olivia Hackman with 16:32 remaining in the first half.

With the score tied at 11, the Redhawks began to soar with a pair of long-distance shots from
Patricia Mack and
Allyson Bradshaw. Mack added a layup along with a jumper from
Yelena Rosado to open the 21-11 lead.

The Kangaroos battled back to get within six points at 24-18 on an old-fashioned three-point play. Callie White was fouled on a jumper and sank her free throw with 9:23 remaining.

Southeast entered the intermission with a 40-33 lead.

The Kangaroos came out of the locker room firing to start the second stanza using a 9-3 run to pull within one point at 43-42 with 17:05 remaining in the game.

Hillary Lively put an end to bleeding by picking up an offensive rebound and converting it into a layup for the Redhawks. Â
On the ensuing UMKC possession, Hackman blocked the layup attempt of Calli White. Mitchell grabbed the rebound and pitched ahead to
Kara Wright for the easy lay in.

The 47-42 lead would be brief as UMKC continued to pressure the Redhawks utilizing an 8-2 run to take a one-point lead at 50-49.

The Kangaroos got a momentum boost as Ellise O'Connor hit a running jump shot with the shot clock expiring to pull within point and was followed by a pair of Nezianya free throws to take the lead with 12:54 remaining.

With UMKC holding a 52-51 advantage, the Redhawks began an 8-0 run to take a 59-52 lead with 10:08 on the clock.
Brittany Harris received a pass under the basket from Rosado. Harris then put a shot fake up that sent the defense into the air and left a wide-open basket for the easy layup.

After a missed jump shot on the Kangaroos offensive end, the Redhawks turned that into an easy bucket from Mack and the 59-52 lead with 9:12 left, forcing an UMKC timeout.

With Southeast holding a nine-point advantage with 2:26 remaining, the Kangaroos began a 7-0 run.
With precious seconds ticking away, UMKC sank a 3-point basket, a pair of free throws and a jump shot to bring the score to 71-69 with 1:07 left.

With the game proving to be an entertaining end, the two squads traded baskets until
Kara Wright hit a jump shot to give the Redhawks a four-point lead at 75-71 with just 11 seconds on the clock.

O'Connor took the inbounds pass and pushed the ball up the floor and dished to White who nailed the 3-point basket with four seconds left.

Needing to foul on the inbounds pass, the 'Roos put Hunter on the free throw line with two seconds left. Hunter hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give the Redhawks a 76-74 lead and the victory.

"I was extremely pleased with the effort our team showed," Margenthaler said. "The thing that I am really proud of is that it is a team effort. We are getting big time efforts from the bench.

"We are getting challenged and it can only help this basketball team down the road."

Wright led the Redhawks with 15 points. Bradshaw, Mack and Hackmann each scored in double figures as well with 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Connor King grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Southeast who out-rebounded UMKC 47-39.

Nezianya scored a game-high 26 points for the Kangaroos.

The Redhawks play the final game of their three-game homestand Tuesday when they host Western Kentucky at 6:30 p.m.

"We are going to enjoy tonight and get back at it tomorrow, mentally and watching film," Margenthaler added. "It is a long season and we have to keep growing."
