Murray State Uses Big Inning In 7-2 Win Over Redhawks

Murray State plated five runs in the fifth inning

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. – Southeast Missouri (18-33, 9-14 OVC) dropped a 7-2 decision to Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field. The Thoroughbreds (22-29, 8-15 OVC) plated five runs in the fifth inning on their way to the victory.

The Redhawks scattered seven hits in the contest with Murray State adding five hits. Southeast flied out or lined out 20 times in the contest.
 
Murray State opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning capitalizing on a walk and a defensive miscue taking 2-0 lead.
 
The Redhawks tied the contest with a two-run triple off the bat of Taylor Heon in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
The Thoroughbreds erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to seal the contest. Shortstop Noah Zipko highlighted the outburst with a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field to put Murray State up 7-2.
 
Will Handlin picked up the save throwing the final three innings allowing one hit as the Murray State evened the weekend series. Bryan Babin (5-4) picked up the win going six innings allowing six hits and two earned runs.
 
Heon led the Redhawks offensively going 2-for-4 on the day with a triple and two RBI.
 
Trenton Moses extended his hitting streak to 19-games, he also extended his reaching base safely streak to 71 games.
 
Zack Smith (2-6) was tagged with the loss going 4.2 innings allowing six runs on four hits. Will Spitzfaden threw 3.1 innings allowing one earned run on one hit.
 
Michael Patman threw a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth inning.
 
The Redhawks and Thoroughbreds wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., CT. at Capaha Field.
