CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision Thursday afternoon at Capaha Field against Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky.
The Redhawks drop to 8-23 overall and 1-6 in the OVC as the Colonels improve to 12-15 and 5-2 in the OVC.
“It was a well played game on our part,” said head coach Mark Hogan. “They just hit the ball hard today.”
The Redhawks tallied the first run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning.
Kenton Parmley opened up the frame with a double down the left field line. He later scored on a double steal and error by the catcher.
EKU added two runs in the fourth inning with both tallies coming with two outs. Back-to-back doubles by Michael Garcia and A.J. Jamison highlighted the inning.
Eastern Kentucky added another two out double in the fifth inning as Jacob Daniel added a two bagger, he later scored on a single from Bryan Soloman to make it 3-1 EKU.
The Redhawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning, but EKU reliever Matt Fyffe got out of the jam with a strikeout to keep the contest at 3-1.
Eastern Kentucky added six runs in the top of the ninth inning with four hits as two doubles highlight the frame as the Colonels took the contest, 9-1.
Christian Hull (2-5) was tagged with the loss going six innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.
“Christian battled today,” said Hogan. “Their top-five hitters are excellent ball players.”
The Redhawk offense was led by Parmley, as the senior was 2-for-4 with a run scored. He extended his hitting streak to 39-games.
Trenton Moses was 1-for-2 with a pair of hit-by-pitches to extend his reaching base safely streak to 51-games.
Derek Gibson extended his hitting streak to 15-games with a single.
EKU starter Matt Harris (4-3) earned the win throwing 7.2 innings allowing an unearned run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Matt Fyffe earned the save throwing 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Daniel paced the Colonels offense with a trio of hits with a pair of runs and RBI.
The Redhawks and Colonels meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., CT.
Ryan Kendall is projected to get the start against lefty Shane Grimm.
