Long Ball Carries Redhawks Past UT Martin, 13-1

The Redhawks hit four home runs on Saturday against UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team hit four home runs including a grand slam by Derek Gibson in the Redhawks 13-1 victory over UT Martin Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field in Martin, Tenn. Southeast (15-29, 6-11 OVC) outhit the Skyhawks (11-31, 5-12 OVC) 15-6 in the contest.

“It was a good win for us,” said head coach Mark Hogan.  “We need to get ready for an important game tomorrow.”

Trenton Moses extended his reaching base safely streak to 64 games. Moses reached base in five of his six plate appearances. He also added three RBI and two runs scored.

The Redhawks opened the contest with four runs in the first inning. Kenton Parmley opened up the scoring with a two-run home run to centerfield. Freshman Ryan Barnes added an RBI double in the frame to help pace the Redhawks fast start.

Moses carried the Redhawks offense in the second and fourth innings. Moses pounded a two-run double down the left field line in the second inning. He also added his 16th home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Kody Campbell added a home run in the fourth inning as Southeast increased their lead to 7-1. Campbell's shot to left field was his sixth of the season.

The Redhawks erupted for five runs in the fifth inning. Gibson highlighted the big inning with a grand slam to centerfield as Southeast expanded their lead to 12-1. Southeast added another tally late as the took the contest, 13-1.

Zack Smith (2-5) picked up the win going a career-high seven innings with a career-high six strikeouts. He allowed five hits in the contest. Smith allowed only two hits in the first four innings of play as he cruised to the victory.

“Smith was coming off a great performance last week and today he continued to pitch well,” said Hogan.

Five Redhawks had multi-hit games on the afternoon. Jason Blum added three hits for Southeast with two doubles.

Parmley scored three runs with two RBI on two hits. He is now four hits away from breaking Jeremy Johnson's school record for hits in a career.

Gibson added two hits with two runs and four RBI as he extended his hitting streak to 28-games. Campbell added a pair of hits with an RBI and two runs scored.

Gibson's grand slam marks the Redhawks third in three weeks and fourth on the season.

Willie Frederick (3-6) picked up the loss going 1.1 innings allowing five runs on five hits.

Two Skyhawk batters had multi-hit games as grant Glasser and Byron Johann paced the UT Martin offense.

The two teams will wrap up their three game set tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m., CT. at Skyhawk Field.
