CARBONDALE, ILL. – Southeast Missouri (14-28) outhit Southern Illinois (23-18) 12-6 on Tuesday afternoon in Carbondale, Ill., but the Salukis held on late earning a split of the season series with a 9-5 win over the Redhawks after leading the contest 9-0.
“We had some chances early, but the door was shut by Dorris,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
The Salukis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They then added three runs in the third and sixth innings leading the Redhawks 9-0 after seven frames.
Southeast battled back in the eighth inning with five runs to cut the Saluki's lead to 9-5.
Kenton Parmley opened the inning with a single extending his reaching base safely streak to 58–games.
Gibson followed with a single to right field extending his hitting streak to 26-games.
Parmley and Gibson later scored on a pair of errors by Saluki shortstop J.C. Davis.
Taylor Heon added an RBI single as Southeast battled their way back into the contest.
The Redhawks loaded the bases in the in the top of the ninth inning off of Saluki closer Todd Eaton, but he got
John Logan Zink to strikeout for the final out as the Saluki held on for the 9-5 victory.
Heon,
Jesse Tierney and
Jason Blum were 2-for-4 on the day to pace the lower half of the Redhawks batting order.
Senior
Trenton Moses extended his reaching base safely streak to 62-games dating back to last season going 2-for-5 on the afternoon. Gibson was 2-for-5 as well with two hits in his final at-bats.
Starter
Will Spitzfaden (1-1) picked up the loss going 2.1 innings in his second start of the season. Fellow freshman
Grant Davis was solid out of the bullpen throwing two innings with two strikeouts.
The Saluki's Chris Serritella was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three runs scored.
Nathan Dorris (6-3) got the win going seven innings with nine strikeouts. He allowed six hits.
The Redhawks return to action on Friday at UT Martin with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m., CT.
