CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri head coach Mark Hogan picked up his 900
th career win Tuesday evening as the Redhawks defeated Arkansas State 5-3 at Capaha Field. Senior
Kenton Parmley extended his hitting streak to 45-games, tying Roger Schmuck (Arizona State, 1996) for fourth all-time in NCAA Division I history.
“I have been blessed with a lot of good opportunities in my career,” said head coach Mark Hogan. “Doing it at Capaha Field is special to me, this is the field I grew up on and the community I grew up in.”
Hogan has complied 515 career wins at Southeast Missouri as he has the most wins in Redhawk baseball coaching history. He also complied 155 wins at West Alabama (NCAA Division II) and 230 wins at Lurleen B. Wallace College (NJCAA).
“The biggest thing is I want 901 on Friday night,” said Hogan.
Freshman
Will Spitzfaden got the win in his first career start going 7.2 innings, a season-high for any Redhawk pitcher. The lefthander allowed three earned runs on six hits.
“Will was outstanding against a good hitting club,” said Hogan. “He showed a lot of maturity tonight.”
Parmley extended his school and Ohio Valley Conference hitting streak record in the third inning with a single to center field. He finished the night 1-for-4 with a run scored.
“Kenton is an amazing guy,” said Hogan. “He is so hard noses and he just brings it ever day.”
Freshman
Cody Spanberger opened up the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double down the left field line scoring
Jason Blum.
Southeast added three runs in the third inning off of a three run blast from
Trenton Moses, his 15
th of the season and his third in his last two games as Southeast led 4-0 after three frames.
The home run extended his school record reaching base safely streak to 58-games dating back to last season.
Arkansas State's Logan Uxa put the Red Wolves on the board in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run to right field to cut the Southeast lead to 4-2.
Southeast added another run in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead on sacrifice fly from Moses as he finished the day with four RBI.
The Red Wolves added a run in the eighth inning, but
Christian Hull threw the final 1.1 innings as the sophomore did not allow a hit and earned his first career save as the Redhawks took the contest, 5-3.
Derek Gibson, Moses and Spanberger had multi-hit nights for Southeast. Gibson extended his hitting streak to 22-games.
ASU starter Cody Woodhouse (1-1) was tagged with the loss going two innings allowing four runs (three earned).
The Redhawks return home on Friday hosting OVC foe Tennessee Tech at 6:00 p.m., CT. Friday marks the second Redhawk Baseball Tailgate of the season. The 2002 OVC Championship team will also be honored before the contest with the Golden Eagles.
