CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team won their second straight contest and their fourth straight over Southern Illinois Tuesday afternoon at Capaha Field downing the Salukis, 4-1.
“We are spreading hits up and down the line-up,” said head coach Mark Hogan, who is now only two wins away from 900 in his career.
The Redhawks improve to 10-24 overall after the win as the Salukis drop to 18-15.
Senior shortstop
Kenton Parmley extended his hitting streak to 41-games in his first at-bat, he is now tied for sixth all-time in NCAA History and is one game short of tying the Ohio Valley Conference record of 42-games.
“Kenton is a tremendous player that just goes after it every day,” said Hogan. “A lot of credit has to go to Coach Cafalone as he has done a great job with all of our guys.”
Parmley opened up the scoring on a
Kody Campbell single to left field as Southeast took a 1-0 lead after one inning.
The Saluki's Jordan Sivertsen tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning with a solo home run to left centerfield. It was his ninth home run of the season, which leads the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Redhawks added their second run in the bottom of the second frame on a double steal home and second base by
Jason Blum and
Cole Bieser. Blum reached third on his first career triple as Southeast led 2-1 after two frames.
Southeast added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Bieser to expand their advantage to 3-1.
The Redhawks closed out their scoring on a solo home run from Parmley in the seventh inning, his fourth home run of the season.
Releivers
Tony Zerrusen (two innings),
Will Spitzfaden (two innings) and
Ryan Prickett (one inning) were strong throwing five innings, not allowing a run on five hits. Prickettt closed out the game earning his second save of the season
Starter
Dylan Lynn (2-0) threw a career-high four innings allowing one run on three hits with career-high six strikeouts.
“It was a big win for our staff today,” said Hogan. “They were outstanding from start to finish.”
Sophomore
Derek Gibson extended his hitting streak to 18-games as the outfielder was 2-for-4 in the contest.
Senior
Trenton Moses extended his reaching base safely streak to 54-games with a single to left field in his final at-bat.
SIU starter Nathan Dorris (4-3) picked up the loss going seven innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with nine striekouts.
Two Salukis added multi-hit contests as Sivertsen and Brock Harding were both 2-for-4.
The Redhawks return to OVC action this weekend at Morehead State. The first contest is set for Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., CT.
