Baseball Drops Series Finale With Austin Peay, 11-7

Sunday's contest marks the first time the Governors have swept a three game series from the Redhawks

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped an 11-7 decision Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field against Austin Peay. The loss marks the first time that the Govs have swept a three game series from the Redhawks.

Southeast drops to 0-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 7-18 overall as the Govs move to 3-0 in conference and 14-10 overall.

“We had several chances in the game, but we gave a well-seasoned club too many chances.” Said head coach Mark Hogan.

The two rivals combined for five runs in the first inning as Southeast took a 3-2 lead after one frame.

Derek Gibson drove a two-run single up the middle highlighting the three run first for the Redhawks. Andy Lennington also added an RBI single in the frame, his first RBI in his last seven contests.

After the Govs added a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 4-3 lead, Southeast tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning. Kody Campbell drove in Lennington in the stanza to tie the game at 4-4.

The Redhawks took a 5-4 lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kenton Parmley in the fourth inning, but the lead was short lived as the Governors added a run in the top of the fifth.

Campbell answered with a two-run line drive homer to right field in the bottom of the fifth as Southeast took their largest lead of the contest at 7-5, but Campbell's fifth home run of the season capped the Redhawk scoring.

The Govs added six more runs in the contest on their way to the victory, but it wouldn't come easy as Southeast loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning. Trenton Moses drove a ball into the gap in left centerfield, but speedy centerfielder Michael Blanchard ran it down to end the contest.

Lennington was 4-for-5 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored, as the redshirt freshman increased his batting average to .337.

Campbell was 2-for-4 for the second straight contest with three RBI and one run scored. Gibson also added a pair of hits and RBI in the game.

Parmley and Moses kept their respective streaks going. Moses has now reached base in 45 straight contests and hit in 16 straight games. Parmley has hit in 32 straight games and reached base in 41 straight contests.

Junior Ryan Kendall got the start for the Redhawks throwing five innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Trevor Kill (1-1) was tagged with the loss throwing an inning plus allowing three earned runs.

Bobby Hurst threw two innings allowing three unearned runs. Freshman Grant Davis threw a scoreless ninth for Southeast.

Zane Leffew (1-1) picked up the win for the Govs throwing two innings of relief. Greg Bachman was 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the Austin Peay offense, he record his 17th and 18th RBI of his career against the Redhawks.

Southeast Returns to action on Tuesday as the Redhawks head to Jonesboro, Ark. to take on Arkansas State at 6:30 p.m., CT.
