CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Fresh off its best performance of the season, the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team looks to build up some momentum in a quad meet in Denton, Texas this weekend. The Redhawks (1-7, 1-2 Midwest Independent) face MIC foe Texas Woman's along with a pair of top-36 teams in BYU and Iowa on Saturday. The quad meet begins at 7 p.m. CT.
Last Time Out – Southeast put together its best performance of the season in front of the home fans at Houck Field House last Friday. The Redhawks defeated Midwest Independent Conference foe Illinois State, 194-375-193.650, to pick up their first dual victory of the year. Southeast posted season bests in all four events, scoring 48.750 on vault, 48.250 on bars, 48.300 on beam and 49.075 on floor.
Megan Fosnow recorded her top all-around score (38.975) of the season to pace the Redhawks while
Emma Garrett scored a career-best 9.900 to win the floor exercise while also recording a season-best 9.800 on vault. Southeast had 16 of its 24 routines score at least 9.725, six of which scored 9.800 or better.
Texas Woman's at a Glance – The Pioneers are 2-0 in MIC duals and have a 6-6 dual record overall. TWU sits just outside the the top-36 cutoff for an NCAA Regional spot at No. 38. Texas Woman's Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) is 193.390, less than two-tenths of a point behind 36th-ranked Kent State. TWU has gotten it together recently, scoring at least 193.675 in each of its last four meets. The Pioneers have the MIC's top ranked floor competitor in Spencer Jones (9.795 RQS) while Rashonda Cannie is second in the conference in the all-around (38.720).
BYU at a Glance – The Cougars sit at 2-5 in dual competition, though they are just inside the top-36 with their 34th-ranked RQS of 193.935. BYU has scored above 194 on five occasions, all in its last six competitions. Raquel Willman represents the Cougars in the all-around and sports a 38.785 RQS. Natalie Pickard is BYU's top gymnast on both vault (9.815) and bars (9.820).
Iowa at a Glance – The Hawkeyes enter the final month before regionals ranked 29th with their RQS of 194.415. Iowa has cracked 194-plus points in six consecutive meets, scoring over 195 on two occasions as well despite its 3-7-1 dual record. Emma Willis is an all-arounder for the Hawkeyes and boasts a 38.355 RQS. Four Iowa gymnasts have individual event RQS marks of higher than 9.800 in Maya Wilkus (vault; 9.820), Tesla Cox (bars; 9.810), Jessa Hansen (bars; 9.805) and Emma Stevenson (floor; 9.815).
Series History – Southeast leads Texas Woman's 42-14. Southeast leads Iowa 18-8. BYU leads Southeast 3-1.
News and Notes:
Breakout Performance – It appears that the Southeast lineup has stabilized its scores after a difficult start to the season. After scoring above 191 in two consecutive outings, the Redhawks erupted for a 194.375 score in their victory over Illinois State on Feb. 24. Southeast posted season bests in all four events, closing the competition with a 49.075 on the floor exercise to secure the comeback win. Sixteen of Southeast's 24 routines scored 9.700 or higher, including all six on floor. Six Redhawks scored 9.800 or higher in the victory over the Redbirds.
Bring in the Specialist – Junior
Emma Garrett has been dynamite for Southeast seven meets into the season, posting top-three finishes on both vault and floor in the Redhawks' first three meets. In 14 routines this season, Garrett has posted 11 scores of 9.700 or higher. In the last dual at Illinois State, the Jacksonville, Fla., native scored 9.750 on both vault and floor. Her 11 scores of 9.700 is the most among all Southeast gymnasts and her 33 career routines of such scores ranks second among all active Redhawks. Garrett earned her first career MIC Specialist of the Week award on Feb. 15, after she tallied a 9.825 on floor and a 9.700 on vault in the Perfect 10 Challenge.
All-Around Success – Megan Fosnow appears to be hitting her stride for the Redhawks in the all-around. The Franklin, Wis., native recorded her top all-around score of the season against Illinois State, finishing with a 38.975. Fosnow has cracked at least 38.300 in each of her last three meets in the all-around competition and earned her first career MIC Gymnast of the Week award on Feb. 28.
'Taylor'-Made Gymnast – After a slow start to the season, junior
Taylor Westrick displayed the form that earned her an individual spot in the NCAA Regional Championships a year ago. The junior has posted eight scores of 9.700 or better in the last four meets after doing so only once in the first three duals of the year. Westrick has been particularly strong on beam, where she has gone 9.800 or better in four-straight competitions. She had her strongest meet of the season against Illinois State on Feb. 24, scoring at least 9.775 on all three events (bars, beam and floor) that she competed in.
Floor General – Junior
Emma Garrett's mastery on the floor exercise has carried over into the first seven meets of the year. Garrett has scored 9.700 or better in each meet, winning the individual crown four times and finishing in the top three on five occasions. She tallied a career high with a 9.900 to claim the event in the win over Illinois State, boasting the Redhawks' highest individual score of the season.
