IPFW 6 Southeast 4 - Box Score
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri starter
Shae Simmons threw six solid innings allowing one hit with a career-high nine stirkeouts, but IPFW plated six runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Redhawks 6-4 Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field.
The Redhawks mounted a late comeback bid in the bottom seventh inning with a three-run homer, but the Mastodon bullpen held strong closing the door in the final frames.
Simmons followed Friday's starter
Christian Hull's lead, striking out the side in the opening inning of the game. IPFW starter Jason Kalber countered Simmons effort going 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts as each starter baffled opposing batters.
Southeast got on the board first in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Derek Gibson hit a triple to right center field, his first hit of his career to give the Redhawks' their first hit of the afternoon.
Gibson would then score on a
Jason Blum single to right field to give Southeast the 1-0 advantage.
IPFW plated six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The scoring outburst was highlighted by three hits. Junior
Michael Patman relieved starter Simmons in the inning, opening the frame with three walks.
Junior
Trevor Kill relieved Patman giving up a three-run single that saw the hitter Shane Trevino reach third on an error. The Mastodons would add three more runs in the inning taking a 6-1 lead.
The Redhawks added three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh frame. Freshman
Cody Spanberger and Gibson opened the inning with singles and would later come around on a three-run homer off the bat of Blum. The round tripper to left field by Blum was the first of his career and cut the Mastodons' lead to 6-4.
The Redhawks threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning placing two runners on base with two outs, but Travis Reboulet earned his first save of the season halting the possible rallying as IPFW defeated the Redhawks 6-4.
Simmons threw a career-high six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.
Michael Patman took the loss giving up three earned runs.
Trevor Kill threw three innings allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Blum led the Redhawks offensively going 3-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored. Gibson was 2-for-3 with a triple and a pair of runs, earning his first hits in a Redhawk uniform.
Trenton Moses extended his hitting streak to 17 games, also extending his reaching base safely streak to 26 games.
Kalber (2-0) earned the win throwing 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts. Malcom white was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored to pace the Mastodon offense.
The Redhawks and Mastodons will wrap up the three game set Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., CT. at Capaha Field.
