CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri Redhawks (1-3) opened their 2012 home schedule with a 8-6 win over Harris-Stowe (1-7) Tuesday at Capaha Field. Senior
Trenton Moses, the Preseason Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year hit a three-run homer to right center in the bottom of the eighth to give the Redhawks the win.
“They had a great plan and both teams played well, it was battle type game,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
The Redhawks got on the board in the bottom of the second innings. Southeast loaded the bases with a trio of walks to open up the stanza. Southeast would then score on a fielder's choice off the bat of redshirt freshman
Jason Blum to take a 1-0 lead.
The Redhawks would add another run to take a 2-0 lead off a Hornet's error. Southeast failed to add runs in the frame after loading the bases.
Harris-Stowe added a run in the fifth inning on a solo home run of the bat of Blake Dirnberger, who played for the Redhawks in 2009 to cut the Southeast lead to 2-1.
The Hornets tied the game in the sixth as HSSU opened up the inning with a pair of hits. Third baseman Logan Peters then tied the game at 2-2 scoring on an infield hit.
The Redhawks took back the lead in the seventh inning.
Cole Bieser opened up the frame with a triple down the right field line. Bieser would later score on an RBI single off the bat of
Kody Campbell,
Trenton Moses would advance to third on the play after reaching on a hit by pitch.
Freshman
Ryan Barnes followed Campbell with an RBI doubled down the right field line scoring Moses on the play. Redshirt freshman
Andy Lennington hit a sacrifice fly to right field extending the Redhawks lead to 5-3.
Harris-Stowe responded with three runs in the top of the eighth to tie the contest at 5-5. The offensive outburst was highlighted by an RBI double by Cesar Tovar as the Hornets capitalized on a Redhawk error.
Southeast answered back with another three spot in the eighth inning. Newcomer
John Logan Zink opened the inning with a double to centerfield, Bieser also reached base after being plunked by a pitch.
Moses gave the Redhawks an 8-5 lead with his three run shot over the right center field fence, with the hit Moses extended his hitting streak to 15 game dating back to last season.
“It is exciting to watch an All-American player like Moses and watch him play some sparkling defensive and he hasn't skipped a beat offensively,” said head coach Mark Hogan.
Harris-Stowe added a run in the ninth, but
Dylan Lynn closed the door as Southeast earned their first win of the season with a 8-6 victory.
Bieser and Zink paced the Redhawks offensively with both sophomores adding a pair of hits and a pair of runs. Moses was 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Campbell was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of walks.
Freshman
Cody Spanberger was impressive in his Redhawks debut going three innings allowing one hit. Junior
Michael Patman and
Hank Williams Jr. each threw a pair of innings for Southeast.
Junior
Trevor Kill earned the win for Southeast, his first win in a Redhawk uniform. Lynn earned his first save as a Redhawk out of the Redhawk Bullpen in the ninth.
Dirnberger led the Hornets going 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a home run. Second baseman Travis Brown added two hits for HSSU.
The Redhawks will host IPFW on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., CT. at Capaha Field.
