AMES, Iowa – Competing in its second meet in three nights, the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team held its scores steady in its dual at Iowa State on Monday night.
The Redhawks (0-7) finished with a team total of 191.200. The Cyclones, ranked just outside the national top 25 at No. 29, claimed the dual with a 195.225.
“I am pleased with our beam and bars showing tonight,” Southeast head coach
Kristi Ewasko said. “Our vault and floor scores were an issue with tired legs since we competed on Saturday. The team fought hard and I was proud of their work ethic tonight. This was definitely an improvement compared to our previous road meets. I think our individuals are starting to build a confidence that they didn't have at the start of the year.”
Southeast opened up on uneven bars, where it recorded a season-best 48.050.
Margaret O'Neal and
Megan Fosnow paved the way for the Redhawks by each tallying a 9.675 score. ISU started off the dual with a 48.550 on vault to grab an early lead in the team competition.
The Redhawks moved to vault in the next rotation, where it posted a 47.375. O'Neal paced Southeast with a 9.650 to finish fourth individually. Fosnow (9.625) also scored above 9.600. The Cyclones put together six strong beam routines, with all six gymnasts scoring 9.700 or higher to finish with a team total of 48.850.
Emma Garrett (9.725) was once again Southeast's top scorer on the floor exercise in the third rotation. The Redhawks finished with a team total of 47.750 while the Cyclones put up a 48.925 on beam.
The night concluded with Southeast on beam, where
Angela Serafini (9.700) and
Taylor Westrick (9.825) each scored 9.700 or better. Westrick's score was the second highest of the apparatus, .025 behind ISU's Michelle Browning. Iowa State finished up with a 48.900 on floor.
Megan Fosnow competed in the all-around and finished with a 38.300, her second best total of the season.
“Taylor is coming around on beam and bars,” Ewasko said. “Megan has also made a difference in all-around. It was great to get Angela back in the beam lineup and scoring well. Hopefully we'll have her back in the all-around soon as well.”
The Redhawks return to Houck Field House on Friday when they host Midwest Independent Conference foe Illinois State at 6:30 p.m. CT.
