About UIC – The Flames are off to a 1-3 start to their season. Their lone win came at home against SIU Edwardsville (68-61). UIC has not played since Nov. 21 and is playing its second road game of the year on Saturday. After dropping a 64-51 decision to Truman State at the beginning of the year, UIC has scored at least 61 points in three-straight games. The Flames have three players scoring in double figures, led by Rachel Story's 20 points per game. Katie Hannemann (13 points/game) and Emily Kobel (10.3 points/game) are also scoring 10 or more per contest and Hannemann leads UIC with 8.3 rebounds per game. Conversely, UIC has allowed 64 or more points in three of its four games and opponents are averaging 78.5 points the last two games. Teams are shooting 40.9 percent from the floor and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc against the Flames.
Last Meeting – Bailie Roberts scored 16 points as Southeast hung tight with UIC in Chicago last year. The Redhawks held a 42-39 lead with 11 minutes remaining, but the Flames closed the contest on a 30-12 run to win 69-54.
With a win, Southeast would…
•Surpass its non-conference win total (3) from last season.
•Improve to 4-4 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
•Defeat its second-straight Horizon League opponent (defeated Wright State 78-66 on Nov. 9).
•Win its fourth-straight non-conference home game.
•Post its second win over an opponent it lost to last year.
What a Difference a Year Makes – The Redhawks have made big strides under second-year head coach
Ty Margenthaler. Through seven non-conference games, Southeast sits with a 3-4 record. At this time last year, the Redhawks were 1-6. Even more impressive is the fact that the Redhawks have gotten off to this start while playing only one home game, their season-opening victory over Wright State on Nov. 9.
Harriel Out – Southeast did not get out of Houston entirely unscathed. Senior forward
Brittany Harriel injured her non-shooting hand during the Redhawks' Nov. 23 game against the Cougars. She is expected to miss 4-5 weeks with a target return date of Southeast's Ohio Valley Conference opener at Belmont on Dec. 31. Harriel scored in double figures in the Redhawks' first four games of the season and averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game prior to her injury. She led Southeast with 10.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season.
King's Court – Freshman forward
Connor King posted the finest game of her young career in Thursday night's game at Missouri. The 6-2 forward tallied a season-high 11 points while also hauling in seven rebounds in 29 minutes on the floor. In the two games since
Brittany Harriel went down with an injury, King is averaging 7.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Prior to that, King only had five points and five rebounds in the season's first five games.
Need to Start on Time – Southeast has made a frustrating habit of digging itself into early holes in games this season. In chronological order, Southeast trailed Wright State 17-14 midway through the first half, went down 19-10 in the first 13 minutes at UMKC, allowed the first nine points of the game at Kansas, trailed Arkansas State 28-12 late in the first half, trailed Houston 31-19 at halftime, spotted Texas-Pan American a 35-25 halftime lead and trailed Missouri 18-2 in the first six and a half minutes. Southeast has shown resiliency in coming back from those deficits to win three times, but the Redhawks have trailed at halftime in six-straight games.
Don't Turn That Dial – Southeast has proven to never truly be out of a game this season. The Redhawks have trailed by 10 or more points in the second half in five-straight games, but have come back to win two of those contests and fought back to within five points in two others. Southeast trailed Arkansas State by 14 at halftime and fell behind Texas-Pan American by 12 in the second half before winning both of those games. Against then-No. 25 Kansas, Southeast went down by 11 points in the second half before tying the contest up in the second half before eventually falling to the Jayhawks. Even a seemingly lopsided 61-44 loss to Houston saw the Redhawks come within five points after trailing the Cougars by 15 points early in the final stanza.
