About UMKC – The Kangaroos dropped their season opener to Missouri Western State, 68-51, on Friday night. UMKC went 22-12 a year ago, finishing third in the Summit League with an 11-7 record. Kim Nezianya led the Kangaroos with 17 points in the game while Ashli Hill also scored in double figures, tallying 11 points and blocking six shots. UMKC was outrebounded, 40-28, and got outscored 35-21 in the first half of its season opener.
A Southeast victory would…
•Improve the Redhawks to 2-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
•Be Southeast's first win in a road opener since the 2007-08 season when it downed Central Arkansas 91-60.
•Snap a 21-game road losing streak in non-conference games.
•Give the Redhawks consecutive wins for the first time since Dec. 7, 2010, snapping a streak of 50 games without recording back-to-back victories.
•Match Southeast's road win total from the 2011-12 season.
Here's Some Offense – Points have been hard to come by the previous few seasons for Southeast, but that may be a thing of the past if its season opener is any indication. The Redhawks racked up 78 points, drained 10 three-pointers, dished out 14 assists and only committed 14 turnovers in Friday night's season opening win over Wright State. That point total would have been the Redhawks' second highest a year ago, when they averaged only 52.5 points per game and scored 70 or more points only twice in 29 games. That final score marked a change in direction for Southeast, as it had been 1-35 in its previous 36 contests when allowing the opposition to score 60 or more points.
A Long Time Coming – It's been awhile since Southeast and UMKC have met on the court. While Monday night's contest will be the sixth time the schools have played each other, it will be the first game between the programs since Nov. 23, 1999.
Starting Out Strong – Bailie Roberts put together a strong game to open up her senior season, leading all players with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth career double-double against Wright State. Her rebounding total tied a career high. This was the fifth time that the Maryville, Tenn., native grabbed double-digit rebounds and the 36th time she has scored at least 10 points (most among current players). She also hit three three-pointers, which also tied a career high.
Nice Game Rookie – Perhaps no player was more important to the Redhawks in their season opening win than freshman guard
Dru Haertling. With starting point guard
Jordan Hunter limited to 16 minutes due to foul trouble, Haertling played major minutes at the point in her first collegiate game and responded with authority. The Jackson, Mo., native did not commit a single turnover in 25 minutes, scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
Balanced Attack – Southeast got contributions from up and down the lineup in its season-opening victory. Four players scored in double figures, led by
Bailie Roberts' 16. Looking beyond that, all nine players who got onto the floor scored at least three points. Southeast's four bench players combined to score 24 of Southeast's 78 points. Seven Redhawks combined to make 10 three-point field goals and four reserves played at least eight minutes, three of whom played 13 minutes or more. In 63 combined minutes, the Southeast bench shot 8-of-12 from the field, 4-of-5 from three point range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The reserves also dished out a combined six assists with only one turnover in that span.
