CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team competes in its first road meet of the season, taking on Illinois State (1-1) on Saturday night at 5 p.m. CT. The Redhawks look to move their dual record to .500 in the young season while also improving their scores and moving up the national rankings.

Last Week – Southeast crowned an individual champion in every event in its season opener against Northern Illinois at Houck Field House on Jan. 13. However, the Huskies' had a little more balance in their lineup and sent the Redhawks to a 190.350-190.100 dual loss. Junior Emma Garrett claimed the floor exercise with an impressive 9.850, the highest score of any gymnast in any event for the dual. Other event winners included sophomore Megan Fosnow (9.725) on vault, sophomore Taryn Vanderpool (9.675) on bars and junior Taylor Westrick (9.750) on beam. Vanderpool competed in her first all-around and took the competition with a 38.100. Sophomore Tamara Gent was the fourth Redhawk to tally a score of 9.700 or better, tallying that exact score to finish fourth on floor.

Illinois State at a Glance – Midwest Independent Conference rival Illinois State split a home and home with Ball State to open the season, winning 190.850-186.300 in its season opener on Jan. 8 before dropping a 191.625-191.275 decision on the road Jan. 13. In its last meet, the Redbirds had eight gymnasts tally scores of 9.700 or better with a high of 9.800 turned in by Melissa Mann on balance beam. Samantha King and Tori Sarantakis have competed in the all-around in each of ISU's first two meets.

Series History – Southeast leads 53-22 (2-1 in 2011).

News and Notes:

Floor General – Junior Emma Garrett's mastery on the floor exercise continued in the season opener against Northern Illinois. Garrett tied her career high with a 9.850 to claim the event, boasting the highest individual score of the dual meet. It marked the 10th time that Garrett has scored 9.700 or better on the floor exercise in her career and the fourth time that she has broken the 9.800 plateau.

Sweeping Gold – While Southeast was unable to claim a team victory in its dual against NIU, the Redhawks put on a good showing individually. Southeast had an individual win an outright or shared title in all four events and also had the top all-around competitor. Megan Fosnow (vault), Taylor Westrick (balance beam) and Emma Garrett (floor exercise) claimed outright titles while Taryn Vanderpool shared the uneven bars crown and took the all-around competition.

Southeast Under Ewasko – The Redhawks have continued to post solid dual records under head coach Kristi Ewasko. In Ewasko's first two seasons, Southeast has amassed a dual record of 30-16, a .652 winning percentage. The Redhawks won their second Midwest Independent Conference title in school history last season and sent three gymnasts to the NCAA Regional Championships as individual competitors. In two seasons, six gymnasts have represented Southeast at the regional meet.

Back for More – Junior Taylor Westrick returns to the mix after representing Southeast at the NCAA Regional Championships in the all-around a year ago. Westrick tallied a 9.700 or higher 24 times in 2011, the most of any returner. She continued to impress at the regional meet, scoring 9.800 on both uneven bars and balance beam while tallying a 9.700 on the floor exercise. She competed in two events in the season opener and claimed her first balance beam win of the year with a 9.750 against Northern Illinois
