CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
Four members of the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team won individual event titles as the Redhawks opened their 2012 season against Northern Illinois on Friday night.

Megan Fosnow (vault), Taryn Vanderpool (bars), Taylor Westrick (beam) and Emma Garrett (floor) each won events while Vanderpool claimed the all-around with a score of 38.100.

The Huskies (1-1) earned a team victory in the dual, 190.350-190.100, holding off a late charge from the Redhawks (0-1) in the process.

“Overall, I'm pleased with tonight,” Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. “We changed things up a little bit after the meet and greet last week. Our motto this week was to fight. It may not be perfect but we needed to fight our way through this meet. I'm not as concerned about the scoring for this weekend, but I wanted to make sure the team fought and put together what we're capable of.”

Southeast grabbed a one-point lead in the first rotation after scoring a 47.700 on vault. Fosnow closed the rotation with a strong 9.725 score, claiming the individual title. The Huskies posted a 46.700 on bars.

The Huskies gained half a point in the second rotation as the Redhawks had to count a fall on bars en route to a 46.800 on the event. Vanderpool (9.675) and Angela Serafini (9.650) were Southeast's top two performers with Vanderpool claiming the bars crown. NIU countered with a 47.300 on vault.

NIU tallied a 48.525 on the floor exercise to grab the lead in the third rotation, closing out with scores of 9.725, 9.825 and 9.700 in its final three routines. Southeast recorded a 47.300 on balance beam, with Westrick posting a team-best 9.750 to claim the event.

Southeast closed with a 48.300 on floor in the final rotation. Garrett claimed the event title with a 9.850, the highest score recorded by any gymnast in any event in the dual. NIU concluded the evening on beam, scoring a 47.825 to earn the team victory.

The Redhawks return to the mat on Jan. 21 when it faces conference for Illinois State on the road.
