Quick Hits
About Lindenwood – The Lions find themselves 3-3 after having their three-game winning streak snapped at Drury (59-49) on Tuesday night. That contest marked the first time this season that Lindenwood has scored fewer than 61 points in a game. Nine players on the Lions' roster are averaging at least 13.5 minutes per game and four of those are averaging double figures in scoring. Sarah Schneiders and Morgan Harrington are each averaging 11 points per game while Marissa Lehnig and Caroline Bourlioux are scoring 10.7 per contest. Bourlioux also paces the Lions with 6.7 rebounds per game. LU has allowed 70 or more points on three occasions this season and opponents are averaging 66.7 points per contest.
Better Starts – The Redhawks opened the season with a rough habit of starting slowly, seeing large deficits in the opening minutes in four of their first five games and trailing at halftime in all five contests. Since starting off in a 30-5 hole in the first 11:10 and trailing 50-21 at the half at UAB, the Redhawks have led at halftime in each of their last three contests, each time by a single point. Prior to this stretch, Southeast trailed 10-1 in the first 3:49 at NC State, 8-0 in the first 2:01 at Illinois-Chicago, 10-0 in the first 4:39 of its home opener against Ole Miss and 12-2 in the first 3:57 at UAB.
Board Work – A point of emphasis for the Redhawks this season has been improving the team's rebounding. That area was still a struggle in the first three games as opponents outboarded Southeast by 13 per game. In the last five games, the Redhawks have only been outrebounded once and are +17 on the glass overall in that span (+3.4 per game).
Block Party – Junior
Courtney Shiffer provided Southeast with a defensive presence in the post during her first season at Southeast. The Highland Community College transfer ranked third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 36 blocks. With seven blocks on the season, Shiffer is now four blocks shy of Lachelle Lyles' career total of 47, which ranks 10th in school history.
Strong Defense – Southeast's defense has been a source of strength this season as it has held three opponents under 60 points and has not yielded 70 points in a game all season. The Redhawks boast the top scoring defense (60.1 points per game) in the OVC. Opponents only shoot 38.7 percent (fourth in the OVC) on the Southeast defense and the Redhawks lead the league in three-point percentage defense (25.6 percent).
Harriel Coming On – After a slow start, junior forward
Brittany Harriel has become more of a factor offensively over the last couple weeks. The Redhawks' leading scorer a year ago totaled only 12 points and attempted only 13 shots from the field in their season-opening three-game road trip, bottoming out with a two-point, one-rebound effort before fouling out at Illinois-Chicago. In the five games since, Harriel has scored in double figures three times and grabbed at least seven rebounds in four games. Over the last five games, the junior is shooting 44.7 percent from the floor and averaging 8.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Sharp Shooting – Southeast has found its three-point shot recently. Over the last two games, the Redhawks have hit 19-of its 48 (39.6 percent) shots from beyond the arc. This coming after Southeast had hit only 11-of-68 three-pointers (16.2 percent) in its first five games and only 1-of-16 in the two games prior to this stretch.
Homecoming Hightlights – Freshman guard
Allyson Bradshaw has found her groove over the last three games after taking a while to get acclimated to the collegiate level. After scoring only three total points in her first five games, Bradshaw is averaging 8.3 points per game off the bench in the last three contests. The highlight of this stretch came in Tuesday's win over Arkansas State where the Cape Girardeau, Mo. native thrilled her hometown fans at the Show Me Center. The former Notre Dame High School standout scored 13 points off the bench, hitting three three-pointers including the game-winning trifecta with 1:58 remaining against Arkansas State. After making only one of her first seven three-pointers in the first five games, Bradshaw has hit 7-of-14 (50 percent) from long range in this three-game stretch.
Rockin' Roberts – Junior
Bailie Roberts has been a consistent source of offense for the Redhawks this season. Roberts has led or tied for the team lead in scoring four times while pouring in double figures in five of eight games. Roberts has tallied 16 points, one shy of her career-high, on two occasions this season.
Costly Droughts – Southeast has gone cold offensively at inopportune times in six of its seven losses, turning tight contests and, in some cases, leads into setbacks each time. The latest scoring slump happened at Northern Iowa on Thursday night, where Southeast did not score for 6:12 seconds and saw a manageable five-point deficit with 9:26 remaining turn into an unsurmountable 22-point hole late. The Redhawks experienced similar slumps in losses at UAB (where Southeast went scoreless for 7:04 and saw a 12-5 deficit spiral out of control to 30-5) and in the home opener against Ole Miss (where a 26-24 deficit in the second half became a 12-point hole as the Rebels outscored the Redhawks 10-0 in a span of 5:55 in an eight-point Southeast loss). In the first two games of the year at NC State and Saint Louis, Southeast went scoreless for over eight minutes, droughts that cost it a shot at a win. After scoring on their opening possession of the second half at NC State, the Redhawks did not score for the next 8:58, which turned a 12-point deficit into a 46-18 margin. After taking a 20-16 lead with 2:40 remaining in the first half at Saint Louis, Southeast went 9:21 without a point, during which SLU scored 24 unanswered points to send the Redhawks to a nine-point setback. While there was no prolonged scoreless streak against Illinois-Chicago, the Redhawks were outscored 30-12 over the final 11 minutes after holding a 42-39 lead.
