CHICAGO – Bailie Roberts scored 16 points for the second-straight game and
Bianca Beck tied a career high with 13 points, but a late run by Illinois-Chicago sent the Southeast Missouri State women's basketball team to a 69-54 loss at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday night.
Roberts shot 7-for-13 from the field while Beck added four assists for the Redhawks (0-3).
The Flames' (2-0) Jasmine Bailey opened the game with a three-pointer on their first possession, the first of eight-straight points by Bailey to make it 8-0 just over two minutes into the contest.
Yelena Rosado drove to the basket to put Southeast on the board at the 16:32 mark. That bucket spurred an 8-1 Redhawks' run to make it 9-8 with 14:09 to play in the first half.
UIC countered with six-consecutive points, as Bailey tallied its first 13 points before a Emily Kobel putback made it 15-8 with at the 11:25 mark.
The Flames' lead was still seven at 22-15 with 8:27 to play in the opening stanza. Undeterred, Southeast cut it to one at 25-24 with 4:21 remaining.

Karley Evans drilled a three-pointer to make it a 23-22 deficit. Following a UIC basket, Roberts cut the deficit back to one on the ensuing possession. The Redhawks grabbed their first lead of the night when Evans' jumper with 1:45 left made it 26-25.
A pair of Bailey free throws swung the score back in favor of the Flames at 27-26, but
Shelah Fields' freebie with 22 seconds remaining tied it up at 27 apiece. With time winding down, UIC once again called Bailey's number and she delivered a fade away three-pointer to finish the first half with 20 points, giving UIC a 30-27 lead at the break.
The Redhawks made 50 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes and held the flames to 34.5 percent shooting. However, nine offensive rebounds and a 19-13 rebounding edge gave the Flames seven more shots to give them the lead at halftime. Roberts and Evans tied for the team lead with eight points in the first half.
Kiara Strickland opened the second half with a jumper to up UIC's lead to five points at 32-27, but Beck followed with three points the old fashioned way, scoring through contact and drilling a free throw to bring the Redhawks within two.
Patricia Mack scored her first points of the season with 13:28 remaining to tie the contest at 35 apiece. After a stop, Roberts put Southeast in front, 37-35 with a pure jumper from the lane.
UIC's Strickland tied it up with a layup on the ensuing possession, but Roberts hit another jumper from the baseline while being fouled, then hit the free throw she earned to give Southeast its largest lead at 40-37. Strickland cut the Redhawks' lead to one on the next possession, but Rosado nailed two free throws to get the lead back to three at 42-39 with 11:03 remaining.
The Flames countered with an 8-0 run that put them ahead for good. UIC outscored Southeast, 30-12, the rest of the way as Strickland scored 13 points in the final 20 minutes and Bailey chipped in 10 more to put Southeast away.
“We played harder for longer tonight,” head coach
Ty Margenthaler said. “We're getting better. We had a great chance at the win, but we have to take some positives from this game and continue building on that, We have to do a better job of doing the little things. The little things are beating us right now.”
Bailey led all scorers with a career-high 30 points and also pulled down nine rebounds. Strickland also scored in double figures, finishing with 15 points.
The Flames shot 41.2 percent from the field, including 50 percent (11-for-22) in the second half. The Redhawks shot 37.3 percent, but struggled to the tune of 27.6 percent (8-for-29) in the final 20 minutes of play. UIC held a 10-rebound advantage (40-30) while committing one less turnover (11-10) than Southeast. Sixteen of the Flames' rebounds were offensive. UIC also made 21 of its 33 free throw attempts (63.6 percent) while Southeast went 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
Southeast is off until Nov. 21 when it hosts Mississippi in its home opener at the Show Me Center. Opening tipoff is at 7 p.m. CT.
