Quick Hits
About Illinois-Chicago – The Flames won their season opener on Saturday, a 61-48 decision at the UIC Pavilion. Jasmine Bailey scored a game-high 18 points, surpassing the 1,000 point plateau for her career. Kiara Strickland (17 points) and Shamiea Green (14 points) joined Bailey in double figures in the game. UIC assisted on 14 of its 21 field goals in the contest. The Flames were tabbed to finish fifth in the Horizon League by the conference's preseaosn coaches poll. Illinois-Chicago is coming off a 14-16 overall record and a 9-9 league record in 2010-11.

Costly Droughts – Two games into the season, the Redhawks are looking to nip an early trend in the bud. Against both NC State and Saint Louis, Southeast went scoreless for over eight minutes, droughts that proved cost it a shot at a win. After scoring on their opening possession of the second half at NC State, the Redhawks did not score for the next 8:58, which turned a 12-point deficit 46-18 margin. After taking a 20-16 lead with 2:40 remaining in the first half at Saint Louis, Southeast went 9:21 without a point, during which SLU scored 24 unanswered points to send the Redhawks to a nine-point setback.

Gotta Get to 60 – One trend that is carrying over from last season is the Redhawks' need to hit the 60-point mark in games. In this 0-2 start, Southeast has not scored more than 45 points in the two losses (one of which was by nine points). A year ago, the Redhawks went 5-2 on the seven occasions that they scored at elast 60 points. Conversely, Southeast is 3-22 when it scores less than 60 points and 1-14 when it scores under 50 points since the start of the 2010-11 season.

Defensive Prowess – The Southeast defense was a relative strength last season and it has been solid through two games this season. Opponents are shooting only 35.7 percent against the Redhawks' defense and have not scored more than 66 points against them. Southeast held Saint Louis to 30.2 percent shooting from the field on Sunday. Since the start of the 2010-11 seaosn, Southeast has held 13 opponents under 60 points.

Hit the Glass – A point of emphasis for the Redhawks this season has been improving the team's rebounding. Southeast opponents grabbed more rebounds in 23 of 29 games and the Redhawks went 3-20 in those instances. The six occasions Southeast pulled down more rebounds than its opponent, it went 5-1. This season, opponents have outrebounded the Redhawks in each of the first two games, leading to their 0-2 record.

Block Party – Junior Courtney Shiffer provided Southeast with a defensive presence in the post during her first season at Southeast. The Highland Community College transfer ranked third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 36 blocks. With one block in the season opener at NC State, Shiffer now needs 10 blocks to enter the school's career top-10 list.

Welcome to College – All 11 of Southeast's available players stepped onto the floor in Friday's season opener at NC State. The players included all three of the Redhawks' true freshmen. Yelena Rosado earned a start and scored four points, Allyson Bradshaw logged 11 minutes off the bench and walk-on Anna Steffel got on the floor in the final two minutes.

Encouraging Exhibition – Southeast got a look at most of its roster in Monday's exhibition contest against Harris-Stowe. Twelve of the Redhawks' 13 players got onto the court with 10 of them scoring points. Southeast's top three front court options led the way with Brittany Harriel (19 points), Bailie Roberts (17 points) and Courtney Shiffer (17 points) combining for 53 of Southeast's 93 points. Southeast went on runs of 20-0 and 19-0 to turn an early 13-9 deficit into a 47-point victory.

Familiar Faces – The Redhawks' roster features a lot of returning talent from a year ago, with all five starters and the top four scorers all on the 2011-12 roster. Juniors Brittany Harriel and Katie Norman tied for the team lead in scoring (8.9 points per game) and Harriel also paced the team in rebounding (6.7 per contest) and field goal percentage (.420). Another junior, Bailie Roberts finished third on the Redhawks with 7.6 points per game while only playing 21.8 minutes per contest.

Welcome Back – One of the main trouble spots for the Redhawks last year was a lack of depth in the post. That situation appears to be rectified going into this season thanks to the healthy returns of Patricia Mack. Mack got injured in the second game of the 2010-11 season, cutting her sophomore season short after a promising freshman campaign in 2009-10 where she averaged 5.4 rebounds per contest and posted two double-doubles.

Youth Movement – The majority of the 2011-12 Southeast Missouri women's basketball team will get the opportunity to develop for more than one season under first-year head coach Ty Margenthaler. Ten of the Redhawks' 13 players are freshmen, sophomores or juniors and many of them figure to log a lot of minutes this season. Southeast's top three scorers and top three rebounders a year ago are all juniors this season.
