Miles Smith Ranks First Nationally In The 400-Meters

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Sophomore Miles Smith of Southeast Missouri State University has recorded the fastest time this season in the NCAA Division I 400-meters.
Smith timed 45.95 at the Mississippi Invitational last weekend to rank ahead of some the nation's top sprinters. Rounding out the top five in NCAA Division I are Darold Williamson of Baylor, Craig Everhard of UCLA, Lionel Larry of USC and Andrae Williams of Texas Tech.
"It is great to have a runner ranked first nationally in any event, but in the 400-meters that is so competitive, it is really an honor," said Southeast coach Joey Haines. "If we continue to get good weather and avoid injuries his times should continue to lower."
Smith also anchors the Redhawks 4 X 400-meter relay team that ranks 11th nationally with a time of 3:07.33.
Brooke Woodruff of the Southeast women's team ranks 15th nationally in the 800-meters with a time of 2:08.61 while Alonzo Nelson of the Redhawks men's team ranks 30th nationally in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.06.
The Southeast men's and women's teams will compete in the Mississippi State Invitational on Saturday. "We are the defending champions in the women's team competition at Mississippi State, but we have so many injuries it will be tough to repeat," Haines said. "We do think we can compete for the men's team title."
The Southeast men won the Mississippi Invitational last weekend.
