Bryant is Proud to Call SEMO Home

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Jobe Bryant arrived at Southeast Missouri with a little more than determination and a belief that football is where he belongs.
The path to Cape Girardeau wasn't glamorous for the native of Park Hills, Missouri who originally showed up as a walk-on.
Through relentless effort and faith in himself, Bryant earned a scholarship just before the start of his 2025 freshman season.
While Bryant was fighting for an opportunity, his close relationship with SEMO Head Women's Basketball Coach Briley Palmer played a valuable part in his journey to the bootheel.
"Honestly, it was a blessing how everything worked out," recalled Bryant. "Coach Palmer and I are from the same area. She found out I wanted to play football and told Coach [Tom] Matukewicz he should take a chance on me. "
Bryant initially passed up playing basketball at a high level before going all-in on his decision to join the Redhawks football program.
"I am thankful Coach Palmer vouched for me. She and I have similar characteristics like high energy and hard work. I appreciate what she did to help me get here," added Bryant.
Bryant saw action in 11 games as a wide receiver and was SEMO's top punt returner during his first year of NCAA Division I football. He caught 18 passes for 207 yards and ran back 17 punts for 381 yards with a 22.4 yards per return average.
Those numbers were enough to place Bryant among the Ohio Valley Conference's Players to Watch entering the 2026 season. Bryant represented the Redhawks at the league's annual Media Day in Nashville, Tennessee, as well.
With a year of experience now behind him, Bryant has stepped into a larger role on a team filled with 53 new players.
"I'm super excited about this year's team and the energy is different," he said. "I feel like my role has increased and I'm working to be more involved in the offense. I think we have a lot of talent, and we'll show teams how physical and tough we are."
Off the field, Bryant keeps his life simple, focused and centered around family.
His first name, Jobe, came from the Bible. Bryant's mom didn't want people calling him Job, so she added an "e" to the end.
"People have a hard time getting my name right. Some call me Job and some call me Joby," commented Bryant with a laugh.
Bryant, after wearing #86 on his jersey last season, changed to 11, a number he holds close to his heart.
"My aunt wore number 11 as a volleyball and softball player. She passed away when I was six years old. I wear 11 to keep her legacy going and feel it fits me the best," Bryant explained.
Family, like football, means everything to Bryant who has four siblings, all of which played sports at some point in their lives. Everyone in his family has worn #11 too.
Combined with his faith and persistence, Bryant has learned to embrace everything that comes his way.
"SEMO is a place where I've grown, earned respect and discovered the power of believing in myself. I want to work hard for every opportunity and turn it into something special. Winning with this team and making my family proud is very important to me," said Bryant.
