Redhawks Drop OVC-Big South Opener to UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. — UT Martin (1-4, 1-0) scored twice in the first three minutes of the game and never looked back en route to a 34-10 win over Southeast Missouri (1-4, 0-1) Saturday night in the Ohio Valley Conference-Big South opener for both teams.

UTM started with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jace Bauer to Bryce Bailey on the first play of the game.

The Skyhawks then capitalized on an interception with a 7-yard run by Bauer. Bauer's touchdown extended the Skyhawks lead to 14-0 just 2:16 into the contest.

SEMO's only touchdown of the game came by way of a 4-yard run by Brandon Epton, Jr. which made it 14-7 with 1:52 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Redhawks struggled offensively with their second interception after a false start penalty halting momentum. SEMO managed only two first downs, both through the air while being limited to 11 rushing yards on four attempts.

UTM again took advantage, this time marching 86 yards in 10 plays. capped the drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bailey giving the Skyhawks a 21-7 lead at the half.

A 31-yard field goal by Cade Hechter and 39-yard field goal by Justin Keller kept the Skyhawks ahead, 24-10, after three quarters of play.

Tommy Ansley ran for 27 yards on three carries and UTM tacked on 10 more points in the final 15 minutes to finish off its first conference victory.

Epton, Jr. ran for 18 yards on 13 carries and added 24 receiving yards on three catches.

Slade Dollar topped the Redhawks with career-high 10 tackles and a sack. 

Kalvin Gilbert was effective in the receiving game with three receptions for 53 yards. 

Both of SEMO's starting and backup quarterbacks in Jax Leatherwood and Patrick Heitert left the game with injuries. Leatherwood left late in the first quarter and Heitert exited the game with under seven minutes left in the third. Neither returned.

Redshirt-freshman Johnny Weber finished the game under center completing 9-of-18 passes for 87 yards.

SEMO is idle next week before hosting Tennessee State on Oct. 11.
