Redhawks Hit Four Home Runs In Series Opener Thursday Night

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Outfielder Josh Cameron went 4-for-5 including two home runs as Southeast Missouri (17-15, 6-1 OVC) overpowered Southern Indiana (8-21, 1-6 OVC) on Thursday night by a final score of 13-4. 
 
Cameron blasted a solo shot and a three-run homer for four RBIs in the game as the Redhawks pounded out 11 hits as a team. 
 
Shortstop Peyton Leeper and left fielder Jevon Mason each homered in the ninth inning. Leeper hit a three-run shot to make the score 12-4. Mason added a solo blast two batters later to give SEMO its 13th run of the contest. 
 
Leeper finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs. 
 
LHP Noah Niznik (4-2) was credited with the win Thursday night for his fourth win of the 2023 campaign. Niznik tossed five complete innings, striking out six. He allowed just three hits and no earned runs in the series-opener. 
 
Cameron got the offense going with his solo blast that came in the first inning with two outs. The lefty slugger blasted a ball over the right-center field fence to give SEMO a one-run advantage before USI came to the plate. 
 
USI would take the lead in the home third with a base hit to left field by Ren Tachioka to make the score 2-1, USI. 
 
SEMO would respond with four runs in the fourth inning. 
 
Designated Hitter Carlos Aranda hit a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded following a single and back-to-back walks. 
 
Peyton Leeper doubled down the left field line to drive in two of his five RBIs in the contest and the Redhawks regained a 4-2 advantage. 

Mason brought in Leeper with an RBI single in the same inning and SEMO never relinquished the lead again. 
 
SEMO would add runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth inning(s) to pick up the sixth Ohio Valley Conference win of the season. 
 
The Redhawks and Screaming Eagles will play game two of the weekend series tomorrow, Friday, April 7, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m., CT.
