Redhawks Host Morehead State on New Year's Eve Afternoon
Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball (3-9, 0-1 OVC) will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 31, when they host Morehead State (5-6, 0-0 OVC) to continue Ohio Valley Conference play. Tip-off is set for 1:15 p.m., CT. at the Show-Me Center on New Year's Eve. 
 
Series History
SEMO comes into the contest having last beaten MSU by SEMO's largest margin of victory in their OVC Tournament history with a 77-38 drubbing in last season's quarterfinal round. The Redhawks swept the season series plus the tournament victory to go a perfect 3-0 against the Eagles in 2022-23. 
 
SEMO is currently on a six-game winning streak in the series and come into the matchup with a 19-16 series advantage. 
 
Charity Stripe
The Redhawks have been very good from the free throw line so far in 2023-24. SEMO is currently shooting .748 from the line (163-218) and had three players on Friday go a perfect 100-percent. Four Redhawks are currently shooting over 80-percent from the line in Jaliyah Green (.850), Alecia Doyle (.818), Indiya Bowen (.842), and Megan Barton (.875). 
 
Last Time Out
The Redhawks dropped their conference opener on Friday night to Southern Indiana by a final score of 75-37 at the Show-Me Center. 
 
Alecia Doyle led the Redhawks, who struggled offensively, with nine points on 3-for-9 shooting and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. SEMO shot just 12-for-60 (20-percent) from the floor in the contest, including 2-for-22 from three-point land. 
 
The Redhawks were an impressive 11-for-15 from the free throw line in the contest (73-percent) as three Redhawks were perfect from the stripe. Doyle, Jaliyah Green, and guard Megan Barton all finished flawless for the game. 
 
SEMO committed 21 turnovers to just 16 for USI as the Screaming Eagles finished with a 27-7 advantage in points off turnovers, and outrebounded SEMO by a 49-34 margin. Guard Kiyley Flowers led the Redhawks in rebounding, finishing with eight total boards.
 
USI forward Meredith Raley finished with a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds.
 
Scouting The Opponent
Morehead State
The Eagles enter the Show Me Center coming off a 55-point win against Davis & Elkins College, 83-28.
 
Matilda Soderlund posted 24 points on a 9-17 clip from the floor and 6-13 from deep.
 
Sophomore guard Hallie Rhodes scored 14 and shot 70% from the field and 50% from behind the arc. Rhodes pulled down five rebounds.
 
Veronica Charles and Katie Novik notched 13 and 12 points. Charles dished out ten assists and recorded four steals. Novik registered eight assists and added three steals and denied four shots on the night.
 
Charles leads the team in points and steals averaging 10.9 points per game and 22 steals while Novik has the most assists and blocks with 53 and ten.
 
The Eagles rank sixth in the OVC in offense averaging 66.5 points per game and second in defense allowing 62.7 PPG with a positive margin of 3.8 points.
 
Cayla Petree is in her third season as the head coach of the Eagles, Petree has 250 plus victories and four tournament appearances to her name.
 
Looking Ahead
The Redhawks will go on the road for the first road conference matchup with the newest member in the OVC in Western Illinois. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m., CT. on Thursday, Jan. 4, in Macomb, Ill.
