2023-24 Redhawks Tip-Off Season Opener Against Southern Illinois Tuesday
Southeast Missouri women's basketball (0-0) will begin the 2023-24 campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 7, against regional rival Southern Illinois (0-0) in Carbondale, Ill. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Banterra Center. 
 
Series History
Tuesday night's season opener will mark the 39th meeting between the two programs and the first one since 2021. SIU holds a 31-7 overall series lead with SEMO and won the last matchup on Nov. 30, 2021, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. by a final score of 78-61. 
 
This is the Redhawks first matchup in Carbondale since Dec. 13, 2020, which resulted in a SIU 67-51 victory. 
 
Nine Seasons at the Helm
The 2023-24 season will mark the ninth season with Head Coach Rekha Patterson at the helm coming off a 2022-23 season with a 16-15 overall record, a 10-8 Ohio Valley Conference record, and a trip to the conference tournament's semifinal round. 
 
Coach Patterson has accumulated a 117-122 career record including a 2020-21 Ohio Valley Conference Championship and making six straight conference tournaments from 2015-2021.
 
Last Season
Southeast Missouri women's basketball finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 16-15 overall record and a 10-8 record in the Ohio Valley Conference, making it all the way to the conference tournament semifinals after ending the regular season on a six-game winning streak to earn a #4-seed in the tournament. Sophomore Jaliyah Green was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference first team after starting 13-out-of-16 games in conference play for Coach Rekha Patterson. The Redhawks season ended in the conference semifinals with a 49-35 loss to No. 1-seed Little Rock.
 
2023-24 Squad
First-team all-OVC selection Jaliyah Green returns after leading the team in scoring a season ago. Green finished the year with 325 points scored including a 10.5 points per game average. 
 
She will be joined in the back court by returning guards Alecia Doyle and Kiyley Flowers. Flowers averaged 3.4 assists-per-game along with 3.1 steals-per- game as she was second in the conference in assists and first in the conference in steals with 95 and 87, respectively. 
 
Flowers had a game-high nine steals against Southern Indiana (2/18/23). 
 
Doyle averaged 6.0 points- per-game including a season-high 17 points against Western Illinois on December 7. 
 
Sophie Bussard, Chandler Davis, Julia Sion, Michaela Mayfield, and Dee Reed are the rest of the SEMO returnees from a season ago. 
 
The 2023-24 campaign will feature three new freshman, a new junior, and a senior to the team. Daejah Richmond, Indiya Bowen, and Amiyah Buchanan make up the freshman class. 
 
Richmond is a freshman guard from Cordova, Tenn., Bowen is a 5-9 guard who hails from Nesbit, Miss., and Buchanan is a 6-0 forward from Evansville, Ind. Richmond was an all-district first team selection at First Assembly Christian School. 
 
Indiya Bowen registered 1,000 career points at Horn Lake High School where she averaged 15 points- per-game over her four-year high school career. Bowen was named as the 2022 3-6A All-District Player of the Year in Mississippi.
 
Amiyah Buchanan was a two-year letter winner at Evansville North High School where she averaged 11.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, earning herself a first team all-conference selection. 
 
Forward Abbigail Stephens and guard Megan Barton make up the rest of the newcomers. 
 
Junior Abbigail Stephens spent the last two seasons at Division-I institution Purdue-Fort Wayne where she averaged 6.9 minutes per game with a .436 shooting-percentage during Horizon League play. 
 
In high school, she averaged 14 points and nine rebounds per game finishing her career with 620 points, 408 rebounds, and 95 assists. 
 
Guard Megan Barton joins the Redhawks after spending last season at Missouri Valley Conference member, Bradley. Barton played in 14 games last season for the Braves after transferring from Rend Lake Community College where she averaged 13.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game from the guard position.
 
Jaliyah Green Named to 2023-24 Preseason All-OVC Team
Junior guard Jaliyah Green was selected to the 2023-24 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference team. Green is the lone Redhawk to land on the women's preseason all- conference team. A season ago, Green led the Redhawks with 10.5 points-per-game while shooting .418 from the floor and .278 from three-point land. She was selected to the 2022-23 First Team All-Conference Team at the end of the season.
 
The Schedule
The schedule features 11 non-conference matchups to begin the season followed by a full 18-game Ohio Valley Conference schedule leading into the conference tournament (March 6-9) at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. 
 
The Redhawks will begin their season against regional rival Southern Illinois on Tuesday, November 7 in Carbondale. The two last met in 2021 at the Show-Me Center. 
 
The first home game of the season will take place on the Saturday of the same week, November 11, when the Redhawks welcome in Stephens College. 
 
A trip to Chicago will see SEMO play two games in the windy city as a return trip to Illinois-Chicago on Friday, November 17 and a matchup with Big 10 member Northwestern on Sunday, November 19 to conclude the trip. The Redhawks bested Illinois-Chicago last season at the Show-Me Center by a final score of 56-55. 
 
SEMO will remain on the road following the trip to Chicago with a matchup with in-state foe Missouri State on Wednesday, November 22 in Springfield, Mo. and will return the following week to host Harris-Stowe on November 28. 
 
Matchups at Missouri, Big 10-member Purdue, and Indiana State will round out the non-conference road matchups as the Redhawks will close the non-conference slate with a pair of home games against Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 19) and Evansville (Dec. 21) at the Show-Me Center. 
 
The Ohio Valley Conference schedule will begin in Cape Girardeau on Friday, December 29 when Southern Indiana comes to the Show-Me Center. This year's league slate includes 18 games with nine in Cape. 
 
This year marks the first in the League for Western Illinois which became an official member on July 1. WIU joins Eastern Illinois, Lindenwood, Little Rock, Morehead State, SEMO, SIUE, Southern Indiana, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, and UT Martin in the 11-team league.
 
Scouting the Opponent
Salukis
Southern Illinois is coming off a 2022-23 campaign that saw the Salukis go 12-19 overall and 8-12 in the Missouri Valley Conference and a second-round exit in the league's conference tournament. 
 
A season ago, SIU was third in the Valley with 73.4 points-per-game which ranked 44th in the nation. 
 
SIU returns three starters in Quierra Love, Shemera Williams, and Laniah Randle from a squad that has nine returners and four newcomers in 2023-24. 
 
The Salukis were good on the defensive end of the floor last season leading the Missouri Valley in steals-per-game (9.90) and were second in blocks-per-game (4.81). They were ranked 27th and 21st in the NCAA in their respective categories. 
 
Shemera Williams is the team's leading returning scorer from a season ago, averaging 10.8 points-per-game in 22-23. 
 
Quierra Love was named to the MVC All-Defensive team last season after averaging 2.0 steals-per-game. She was second on the team in assists with 3.9 per game. 
 
Jaidynn Mason was named to the MVC All-Freshman team after averaging 7.5 points, 2.2 assists, and 1.8 steals in 31 games played.
 
Looking Ahead
Women's basketball will be back in action later this week to make their season-debut at the Show Me Center on Saturday, Nov. 11, against Stephens College. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m., CT. in Cape Girardeau.
