NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Dylan Dodd threw seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and Southeast Missouri (24-17) hung on for a 3-2 series opening win over Lipscomb (17-26) Thursday.
Dodd was again outstanding as just five Lipscomb hitters reached base against him. He faced 26 hitters and did not allow a walk.
While Dodd was having his way with the Bisons, Dylan Bierman countered with a strong start of his own.
Bierman no-hit SEMO for four innings and held the Redhawks scoreless through five.
However, SEMO got to Bierman in the sixth.
Jevon Mason led off with a double to left center and went to third when
Tyler Wilber grounded out to second.
Danny Wright followed with a single and Mason scored the game's first run. On the next play,
Andrew Keck reached on a base hit.
Lincoln Andrews then delivered a two-out double to score both Keck and Wright giving the Redhawks a 3-0 lead.
Dodd gave way to freshman
Kyle Miller in the eighth inning and the Bisons made things interesting against the Redhawks bullpen late.
Brian Moore began the eighth with a double, went to third when Tiger Borom flied out and scored Lipscomb's first run on a groundout.
Carson Wright reached on a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth and advanced to second when Carter Smith was hit by a pitch. Moore followed with a single to score Wright cutting SEMO's lead to 3-2.
Austin Williams ended the threat when he struck out Borom. Williams picked up his team-high fifth save of the season.
Dodd improved to 7-1 and recorded at least eight strikeouts for the 11th time in 12 starts. He has thrown 25 consecutive scoreless innings.
Bierman (3-3) gave up three runs and four hits, struck out four and walked one in 5.1 innings.
Seven Redhawks had a hit, including Mason, Wilber, Wright, Keck, Andrews,
Austin Blazevic and
Peyton Leeper.
SEMO, which has won seven of its last nine games, resumes its series with Lipscomb Friday at 4 p.m., CT.
