CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (6-4) secured a doubleheader sweep of William Woods (6-2) in Monday's doubleheader home opener at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
SEMO handed William Woods of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics its first two losses of the 2021 season with a 6-1 opener followed by a 7-0 second match.
Manuela Barriga,
Vivian Lai and
Maja Lundell each registered a pair of singles victories in Monday's doubleheader. For Barriga, it was her first time competing since the season opener at Missouri on Jan. 24. The junior who hails from Bogotá, Colombia posted her first three (two singles and one doubles) wins of the 2021 campaign.
Lundell made her 2021 debut Monday against the Owls.
Daniela Hlacikova,
Ksenia Shikanova,
Romana Tarajova,
Lera Valeeva and
Teona Velkoska each secured singles wins.
SEMO went 5-1 in doubles and grabbed the point to open both duals.
In the first match of the doubleheader, Hlacikova and Velkoska ousted Hannah Meyer and Rukshika Wijesooriya, 6-0. The duo is currently on a three-match win streak.
After dropping the top doubles match,
Grace Powderly and Barriga rallied past Marta Calvo Larraz and Mireia Jordan, 7-6 (8-6), at the third position.
Powderly a junior from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, captured her first two doubles wins of the 2021 season Monday against William Woods. With Lai, she eased past Mireia Jordan and Calvo Larraz, 6-1, in the second match of the doubleheader.
SEMO would then close out the opener with five singles wins at the third, first, fifth, second and fourth slots.
Hlacikova competed at the top position for the first time in her career and beat Zlata Shuraeva, 6-2, 6-1.
At the no. 2 position, Shikanova fought past Ana Zavala in a super tiebreak, 6-0, 5-7, 10-6.
Lai bested Calvo Larraz, 6-2, 6-1 at the third singles slot. Lundell defeated Mireia Jordan, 6-2, 6-3, at the fifth lineup spot.
Barriga overcame a first set setback to fight past Wijesooriya, 0-6, 7-5, 10-3, at fourth singles.
Powderly dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Ariadna Jordan at the final singles match.
In the second match of the doubleheader, SEMO swept both the doubles and singles competition.
The Russian duo of Shikanova and Valeeva defeated Meyer and Wijesooriya, 6-0, at no. 2 doubles. After a third doubles win for SEMO,
Kseniya Zonova and Tarajova overcame Shuraeva and Zavala, 6-3, at the top spot.
SEMO closed out the dual with two-set wins at each singles match.
Tarajova eased past Shuraeva, 6-1, 6-1, competing at no. 1 singles.
Lai competed at the second position for the first time in her career as a Redhawk and beat Zavala, 6-1, 6-3.
Valeeva defeated Wijesooriya at the third singles slot, 6-0, 6-1.
At no. 4, Velkoska edged Mireia Jordan, 6-2, 6-1.
Barriga defeated Ariadna Jordan, 6-1, 6-0, at the fifth slot and Lundell overcame Meyer, 6-4, 6-0, at the final singles lineup position.
SEMO will stay in Cape Girardeau and host Illinois State Sunday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. The Redhawks will take on the Redbirds in their final non-conference dual at 12 p.m. SEMO will then open its Ohio Valley Conference slate on March 19 against UT Martin in Martin, Tennessee.
