Redhawks Conclude Non-Conference Play with 4-2 Victory over Illinois State Saturday

PADUCAH, Ky. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (7-4) wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 4-2 win over Illinois State (10-7) of the Missouri Valley Conference Saturday at the McCracken County High School Tennis Indoor Facility.

Romana Tarajova captured a pair of wins in both the singles and doubles competitions.

Daniela Hlacikova, Vivian Lai, Kseniya Zonova, Ksenia Shikanova and Lera Valeeva each had a victory in the dual Saturday.

SEMO won the doubles point in their third straight match to open the contest.

Tarajova and Zonova eased past Tijana Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic, 6-1, to open the dual. The duo improved to 4-2 in 2021 with their second consecutive win.

Shikanova and Valeeva secured the doubles point with a 6-4 decision on Jelena Karla Vujicic and Alicja Zduniak at the no. 2 position.

Hlacikova and Teona Velkoska led their third doubles match, 5-2, before the competition switched to singles.

When the dual moved to singles, the Redbirds won matches at the fourth and third slots to pull ahead 2-1.

Natalia Bravo beat Zonova, 6-4, 6-3, before Laura Arciniegas overcame Shikanova, 6-3, 6-1.

SEMO then rallied off wins at the first, second and fifth lineup slots.

Tarajova bounced back after dropping the opening set to beat Zlatanovic, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the top singles slot.

Hlacikova also responded after an opening frame setback to defeat Damnjanovic, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. She leads the Redhawks in 2021 with an 8-1 mark and has two wins at the second lineup spot.

Lai then outlasted Penelope Abreu, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 at no. 5 singles to grab the victory for SEMO.

The dual was originally scheduled to be contested at the Redhawks Tennis Complex on Sunday but was moved to an indoor venue due to inclement weather forecasted for the Cape Girardeau area.

SEMO will next travel to Martin, Tennessee, to open their Ohio Valley Conference schedule against UT Martin on March 19. The Redhawks were selected to finish the 2021 season third in the OVC while UTM was pegged tied for seventh.
