Redhawks Split Pair of Extra Inning Games Saturday to Take Series on Austin Peay, 2-1

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri baseball (10-8, 4-2 OVC) split a pair of extra inning games with Austin Peay (4-13, 2-4 OVC) Saturday at Capaha Field. SEMO captured the doubleheader opener, 6-5, in 11 innings before dropping a 12-11 decision, in 12 innings in the nightcap.
 
With the split, SEMO took the weekend series on APSU, 2-1, with Friday's 6-3 victory.
 
Trailing 3-0 in Saturday's opener, SEMO cut into the Austin Peay lead with a solo homer from Danny Wright in the eighth inning.
 
Ty DeLancey then extended the Govs advantage to 4-1 with a home run to right in the ninth. Jack Alexander added a RBI double to center to make the Austin Peay lead, 5-1, heading into the bottom of the ninth.
 
SEMO knotted the game at 5-5 with a four-run ninth frame.
 
In the 11th inning, Peyton Leeper was plunked by a pitch before advancing to scoring position on a wild pitch. Braxton Zivic then drew a walk to set the stage for Devon Mason's extra inning heroics.
 
Mason singled to left to score Leeper to provide SEMO with the game one victory. Mason compiled a pair of RBI in game one of the doubleheader.
 
Blake Cisneros earned the win, pitching two innings, facing seven batters in relief. Cisneros registered a pair of strikeouts and didn't allow a hit. Noah Niznik started the game, allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings of work.
 
Greg Norman was handed the loss.
 
Tyler Wilber and Andrew Keck each had two hits in the doubleheader opener.
 
SEMO then mounted a wicked comeback to force extra innings in the night cap. The Governors extended their lead to 11-4 with a nine-run seventh frame.
 
The Redhawks chipped away with a run in the bottom of the sixth and three runs in both the eighth and ninth.
 
Wade Stauss knocked a home run to right to pull the Redhawks within six, 11-5, in the seventh.
 
SEMO benefited from some Governors errors in the eighth to claw within three. Austin Peay finished the contest with seven errors.
 
Basler then forced extra baseball for the second game of the day with a three-run double in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Tied at 11-11, the Governors outlasted SEMO in the 12th inning of the four hours and 35 minute contest. Alexander singled before being lifted for a pinch runner. On the basepaths, Xavier Torres stole second and third before John Bolton's game-winning double.
 
Starter Kyle Miller allowed five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts, before being lifted in the seventh inning. Collin Wilma was exceptional on the mound in relief, compiling four innings of one hit baseball, receiving the ball in the eighth. Wilma also struck out five Governors.
 
Austin Peay's Nick Wellman earned the win, shutting down the Redhawks in the final three innings. He allowed just two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
 
Blazevic went 3-for-7 in the second game of the doubleheader with 2 RBI. Mason finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
 
SEMO will stay home and host Southern Illinois Tuesday at Capaha Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m., CT.
