EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIU Edwardsville (6-4, 1-0) scored five runs in the sixth inning to key a 6-2 win over Southeast Missouri (5-7, 0-1) Friday afternoon in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Down, 2-1, after five-and-a-half innings, SIUE took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Raul Elguezabal led things off with a single to center and scored on an ensuing double by Ole Arntson. Avery Owusu-Asiedu followed with a RBI-triple. Doubles by Josh Ohl and Richie Well scored the other three runs to stretch SIUE's lead to 6-2.
A sacrifice fly by
Danny Wright put the Redhawks ahead, 1-0, in the top of the fourth inning.
After SIUE tied the game at 1-1 an inning later, SEMO regained a 2-1 edge when
Peyton Leeper singled, advanced to third on a base hit by
Wade Stauss and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Tyler Wilber in the top of the sixth.
SEMO managed to get a runner on base in each of the final three innings, but came up empty.
Dylan Dodd (1-1) fell to his first loss of the season. Dodd allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out 10 and walked one in five innings. It was his second 10-strikeout game of the season and fourth time he finished with 10 or more strikeouts in a game during his career.
Stauss led SEMO with two hits, while Leeper,
Andrew Keck and
Ty Stauss added one each.
SIUE registered nine hits. Elguezaba and John Stallcup had two hits apiece.
David Llorens (2-1) picked up the win. Llorens scattered three hits and gave up two runs, while striking out eight and walking three in six innings.
Tyler Bastunas secured his first save of the season following three scoreless innings.
SEMO and SIUE wrap up their series with a 1 p.m., CT doubleheader Saturday. Left-hander
Noah Niznik will pitch game one. The Redhawks other starting pitcher is to be announced.
