Dodd Strikes Out 10, Redhawks Slip Late in 6-5 Extra Inning Loss to #2 Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Southeast Missouri (2-2) let a three-run lead slip away with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and #2 Arkansas (4-0) escaped with 6-5 come-from-behind win in 10 innings Thursday at Braum-Walker Stadium.

SEMO led, 5-2, in the bottom of the ninth when Arkansas rallied for three runs on four hits to force extra innings.

Zack Gregory got things going with a one-out single to right center and advanced to second on an ensuing run-scoring hit by Jalen Battles. Cayden Wallace scored on the play. Robert Moore followed with a single to load the bases. Moore's long single went off the top of the outfield wall and stayed in the ballpark. After a replay review, the hit was ruled a single.

Christian Franklin then stepped in and walked allowing Gregory to score. Battles touched home for the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Cullen Smith to tie the game at 5-5.

Right-handed reliever Jaxon Wiggins came on and posted back-to-back strikeouts en route to retiring SEMO in order in the top of the 10th inning.

Arkansas loaded the bases with the help of a 14-pitch at-bat that resulted in a walk for Wallace in the bottom of the 10th. After Gregory was hit by a pitch, Battles hit a one-out infield single to score Casey Opitz for the game-winner.

SEMO gained the momentum early when it knocked SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week Caleb Bolden out of the game in 27 pitches. The Redhawks sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs off Bolden in the top of the first inning.

Peyton Leeper led things off with a walk and went to second on a groundout by Austin Blazevic. Tyler Wilber was hit by a pitch and Andrew Keck walked to load the bases. Freshman Lincoln Andrews hit safely in his fourth-straight game, this time delivering a single to score Leeper. Wilber touched home on a fielder's choice and Keck stole home on the front end of a double steal to grab the Redhawks a quick 3-0 advantage.

Arkansas used a solo home run in back-to-back innings to make it a one-run ballgame. Franklin homered with two outs in the bottom of the third and Brady Slavens added a one-out home run to right center shrinking SEMO's lead to 3-2 in the fourth.

SEMO stretched its lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth inning on a two-RBI single by Danny Wright.

Both teams had nine hits. Nine different Redhawks had a hit. Wright paved the way with three RBI, while Wilber and Keck scored two runs each.

Dylan Dodd was magnificent in his second start of the season that ended in a no-decision.

Dodd finished with 10 strikeouts, walked two and allowed just two runs on three hits. He struck out two in each of his first three innings and sat the Razorbacks down in order in the second. Dodd also no-hit Arkansas through his first 2.2 innings.

Austin Williams, Kyle Miller and Blake Cisneros pitched the final 3.1 innings for SEMO. Miller (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Opitz and Battles topped the Razorbacks with two hits apiece. Wiggins (1-0) picked up his first win of the 2021 campaign.

SEMO and Arkansas resume their series Friday at 3 p.m., CT. Left-hander Noah Niznik will make his second start.
