Redhawks Sweep Eastern Kentucky, 4-1, 9-7

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.  – Haley Thogmartin tossed a complete game victory and picked up a save, and Rachel Anderson went a perfect 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored and four RBI to lead Southeast Missouri (27-8, 5-1) to a 4-1, 9-7 doubleheader sweep of defending Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion Eastern Kentucky (18-13, 5-3) Monday.

SEMO pounded out 21 hits and smacked four home runs en route to its first doubleheader sweep of EKU since 2009.

A senior, Thogmartin pitched a complete game three-hit gem with a career-high 10 strikeouts to lead SEMO to victory in game one. She struck out five of the first eight hitters she faced and allowed only one walk in her team-high fourth complete game of the season.

SEMO staked Thogmartin to an early lead after scoring one in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI-single by Anderson. Anderson's hit to center brought home Mykaela Arellanes who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.

With two outs in the third, Anderson belted a home run over the center field wall to increase the Redhawks lead to 2-0.

SEMO tacked on another run when Sarah Messex touched home on Arellanes' groundout in the bottom of the fourth.

Addison Barnouski then followed with a leadoff home run in the fifth inning to polish off the game one win.

Thogmartin, who improved to 11-3, has won in each of her last five starts. Her 11 victories currently rank third in the OVC.

Anderson and Claudia Gallo combined for five hits, seven runs scored and two home runs to propel the Redhawks to victory in the nightcap.

Tied, 5-5, after three innings, Anderson hit a three-run home run to put SEMO ahead. For Anderson, it was her team-high ninth bomb of the season.

After EKU scored to cut SEMO's lead to 8-6 in the top of the sixth, Gallo countered with a solo home run to left for fourth round-tripper this year.

The Colonels had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Thogmartin got Samantha Reynoso to fly out in foul territory down the first base line to nail down her second save.

In addition to hitting a 2-RBI double, Kaylee Anderson (2-0) was credited with the win in relief. Anderson allowed a run on three hits in 2.1 innings.

SEMO dealt game one starter Bethany Todd (5-1) her first loss and turned around to beat Mollie Paulick (6-6).

Offensively, four Redhawks had three or more hits in the twin bill. Anderson paved the way with five, Gallo followed close behind with four and Parker Bandy and Barnouski each contributed three. Anderson also stole two bases, walked three times and went over 50 hits for the season (52).

SEMO, which is 18-2 in its last 20 games, travels to SIU Edwardsville for a doubleheader Saturday.
