Arellanes Gets Five Hits as Redhawks Split Doubleheader with SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.  – Mykaela Arellanes went 5-for-8 with two home runs, a pair of doubles, five runs scored and four RBI as Southeast Missouri (28-9, 6-2) split a doubleheader with SIU Edwardsville (10-16, 2-4) Saturday. The Redhawks won game one, 14-1, and dropped the nightcap, 4-3.

SEMO had nine extra base hits in its commanding game one victory.

The Redhawks jumped all over SIUE starter Corrina Rivas in the first inning. Arellanes belted a leadoff double to right center and quickly scored on an ensuing double by Claudia Gallo. Gallo stole third and scored an unearned run on an error to grab SEMO a 2-0 lead.

After Sarah Messex tripled in the second inning, Arellanes slugged a home run over the left field wall to push SEMO's lead to 4-0.

Rachel Anderson then doubled home a run in the fifth inning before SEMO scored nine runs in the top of the seventh.

Ashley Ellis hit a three-run home run and Messex plated a run when she walked with the bases loaded. A hit and error led to three more runs before Arellanes homered for the second time to cap the huge inning. Arellanes hit multiple home runs in a game for the first time in her career.

SEMO outhit SIUE, 12-6, and finished with five doubles, a triple and three home runs.

Arellanes reached base in all four of her at-bats, going 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three RBI and a career-high five runs scored. Anderson followed with two hits, both of which were doubles.

Haley Thogmartin (12-3) went the distance allowing only one run on six hits. Thogmartin, who tossed her fifth complete game of the season, struck out six and walked one, as well.

Rivas (4-7) suffered the loss. She gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out three in just 2.1 innings.

The 13-run victory marked SEMO's largest over SIUE since the teams began playing each other in 1981.

SEMO trailed 3-0 after five innings, but battled back to tie things up in the top of the sixth in game two.

Addison Barnouski led off with a double and scored on a single by Kaylee Anderson. Back-to-back two-out doubles courtesy of Messex and Arellanes brought home two more runs to tie the game at 3-3. Messex scored the tying run on Arellanes' hit. Bailley Concatto reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth and later scored the winning run from second base on back-to-back wild pitches with two outs.

R. Anderson got on by way of a bunt single to begin SEMO's final at-bat in the seventh, but was thrown out attempting to steal second for the second out. Barnouski singled down the right field line before K. Anderson flied out to end the game.

K. Anderson (2-1) took the loss in relief. She allowed one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.

Rivas (5-7) bounced back to win the nightcap. She struck out two, walked four and gave up three runs on 11 hits in her complete game victory.

R. Anderson and Messex followed Arellanes with four and three hits in the doubleheader, respectively. Messex also scored three runs.

SEMO notched a total of 13 extra base hits in two games against the Cougars. Nine of those were doubles.

SEMO heads to UT Martin for a midweek doubleheader on Apr. 9.
