CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Freshman Morgan McCourt lifted Southeast Missouri to a 3-0 victory over Illinois-Springfield Friday night.
Jennifer Brien attacked the Prairie Stars first with a goal in the 18th minute. The ball bounced off of the goalkeeper and Brien was able to tap it into an empty net. She was assisted by Cassidi Tomsu.
Morgan McCourt scored twice in the match to really push the Redhawks above the Prairie Stars. The Burlington, Wis. native scored her first goal in the 44th minute off of a cross by Emily Holten who sent it from the far left corner.
McCourt's second goal came in the second half at the 80th minute off of a cross from Katie Wegmann who received the ball from across the field. The zig-zagged play ended up right in front of McCourt who was able to send it into the net.
Both teams made changes in the goalkeeper at halftime. The UIS goalkeeper made eight saves in the second half.
Kayla Byrd got her first career start and recorded a single save in the first half. Freshman Bailey Redden came in for the second half and recorded a save as well.
The 3-0 victory is the first shutout of the season.
