Redhawks Sweep Murray State, 8-7, 11-8

MURRAY, Ky.–Southeast Missouri (22-13, 6-2) swept Murray State (10-23, 0-6) in a doubleheader Sunday. The Redhawks won by scores of 8-7 and 11-8.

SEMO trailed entering the top of the seventh inning before scoring two runs to pull off a come-from-behind win in game one.

Down, 7-6, Sarah Messex hit a one-out single and went to third on a base hit by Abby Tillotson. On the next play, Darby Pruett reached on an error and Messex scored the tying run. Ashley Ellis followed with the game-winning single to left field and Tillotson scored.

The Redhawks held a 6-3 lead after scoring three times in each of the game's first two innings.

Messex delivered a two-RBI single and then scored on a groundball out in the top of the first.

In the second inning, Parker Bandy tripled home Brooke Rheinecker and scored on an infield hit by Rachel Anderson. Anderson later scored on a two-out double by Addison Barnouski.

A three-RBI triple by Sierra Gilmore keyed a four-run inning as the Racers took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Freshman Rachel Rook (2-3) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit in 3.2 scoreless innings. Rook also struck out four and walked five.

Madeline Krumrey started for the Redhawks and allowed seven runs on six hits before exiting the game in the fourth inning. Krumrey had three strikeouts in her 3.1 innings of work.

SEMO outhit MSU, 11-7.

Messex went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Anderson and Ellis followed with two hits each. Messex's four hits were a career-high.

The Redhawks began the nightcap just as it did in game one by scoring three runs in the top of the first.

Anderson scored the game's first run on a passed ball and Addison Barnouski blasted a two-out, two-run home run to put SEMO ahead, 3-0. For Barnouski, it was her sixth home run of the season.

After MSU answered with three runs of its own to tie the game in the bottom of the first, the Redhawks regained a 4-3 edge on a solo home run by Pruett in the top of the second.

Pruett later singled to right field and scored Barnouski to tie the game at 5-5 in the fourth.

Then, SEMO capitalized on four errors by the Racers defense to score four runs in the top of the sixth inning.

A RBI-double by Tillotson and run-scoring single by Pruett tacked on two more runs to make it 11-5 in favor of the Redhawks in the seventh inning.

MSU made things interesting during its final at-bat when Lexi Jones launched a three-run home run with two outs. That, however, was as close as the Racers would get.

Pruett narrowly missed hitting for the cycle. She finished at 4-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Anderson and Barnouski followed with two hits apiece as the Redhawks collected a total of 12 in the nightcap.

Haley Thogmartin (7-5) earned the win. Thogmartin struck out six and did not allow a walk in six innings. She also gave up five runs on seven hits.

Grace Vaughn (0-2) fell to her second loss of the season. Vaughn walked one and allowed five runs and five hits in four innings out of the bullpen.

SEMO returns to action for a doubleheader at Eastern Illinois on Apr. 11.
