CHARLESTON, Ill.–Ohio Valley Conference leader Eastern Illinois (27-8, 6-0) swept Southeast Missouri (22-15, 6-4) in a doubleheader Wednesday at Williams Field. The Panthers won both games by a score of 4-1.
Jessica Wireman went the distance with 12 strikeouts and Haley Mitchell hit a three-run home run to lead EIU to its game one victory.
In her fifth game starting in the leadoff spot,
Parker Bandy singled through the right side for the game's first hit. Bandy immediately went to third on an ensuing base hit by
Rachel Anderson. After Anderson stole second,
Sarah Messex flied out to right field and Bandy scored to give SEMO an early 1-0 lead.
EIU tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Mia Davis singled and came around to score on a two-out double by Breya Cooper.
With two runners on in the third inning after Andrea Roberts tripled and Mady Poulter walked, Mitchell stepped in and hit a home run over the right field wall to push the Panthers lead to grab the Panthers a 4-1 cushion.
SEMO had just two more baserunners, neither of which made it into scoring position, the rest of the way.
Wireman (13-4) allowed just one run on five hits, all singles. She also walked two.
Madeline Krumrey (10-5) suffered the loss. Krumrey gave up four runs on 10 hits, struck out six and walked one in six innings.
Bandy, Anderson,
Ashley Ellis,
Claire Wernig and
Claudia Gallo each had a hit. For Anderson, her single in the first inning marked the 100
thhit of her career.
Mia Davis' two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning sent EIU to a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
Messex stole home on the front end of a double steal to pull the Redhawks within a run in the top of the fourth.
Mitchell then reached on an infield single and Davis followed with a home run to left center to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Michelle Rogers retired SEMO in order in the seventh inning. Rogers (12-3) allowed just one run on three hits in her complete game victory. She also struck out seven and walked two.
Haley Thogmartin (7-6) took the loss. Thogmartin scattered five hits and gave up four runs in five innings.
SEMO had only three hits in game two, one each by
Abby Tillotson,
Madison Harris and Gallo.
The Redhawks return home to host SIU Edwardsville in a doubleheader Friday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., CT, at the Southeast Softball Complex. SEMO will wear its special green jerseys to raise awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation as part of Donate Life Month.
