CARBONDALE, Ill.–Sydney Jones delivered a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to send Southern Illinois (20-12) to a 2-1 win over Southeast Missouri (19-12) Thursday at Charlotte West Stadium.
After coming up empty twice with the bases loaded, SIU broke through to win the game in the ninth.
Katel Massa singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth and went to second on a passed ball. After Jen Jansen walked, both Massa and Jansen advanced on a passed ball. Megan Brown was then intentionally walked to load the bases and Jones followed with the game-winning hit.
Jansen had a RBI-single to grab the Salukis a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the fourth.
With two outs in the top of the fifth,
Sarah Messex blasted her team-high sixth home run of the season to tie the game.
The Redhawks finished with five hits, four of which were singles.
Randi Dae Conway,
Abby Tillotson,
Claudia Gallo, Messex and
Parker Bandy had one each.
Haley Thogmartin (5-5) suffered the loss. Thogmartin issued five walks, struck out two, gave up three hits and allowed a run in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Brianna Jones picked up the win. Jones tossed 4.1 scoreless innings and recorded six strikeouts. She also allowed just two hits.
The Salukis committed four errors and had six hits.
