LEXINGTON, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (8-7) was swept during the final day of the John Cropp Classic Sunday. The Redhawks lost to Ohio University, 5-1, and fell to host #22 Kentucky, 11-2.
A two-out, two-RBI single by Katie Yun put Ohio ahead in the third inning.
Alex Day ignited a late inning rally with a two-out single up the middle. Mikayla Cooper followed with a base hit and Morgan Geno walked to load the bases. Yun then stepped in and ripped a single down the right field line to score both Cooper and Day giving the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Ohio used another big two-out hit, this time a three-run home run by Day to blow the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning. Michaela Dorsey reached on a single to left and Natalie Alvarez walked. After Desirae Vellanueva fouled out, Day smashed
Alexis Estes' first offering over the wall in right center widening Ohio's lead to 5-0.
The Redhawks avoided the shutout when
Darby Pruett doubled home
Ashley Ellis with two outs in the top of the seventh. It was Pruett's first extra base hit of the season.
Ohio outhit SEMO, 9-4. Day went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI and Cooper finished at 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double to lead the Bobcats. Yun also added two hits.
Madi McCrady (2-0) went the distance to claim her second win of the season. McCrady allowed four hits and a run while striking out eight and walking seven.
Haley Thogmartin (1-3) took the loss. Thogmartin gave up two runs on six hits, struck out two and walked one in three innings.
Mykaela Arellanes went 2-for-3 to lead SEMO, which stranded 12 baserunners and hit 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Kentucky hit three home runs, including a three-run homer by Abbey Cheek in the fifth inning and a three-run bomb by Mallory Peyton in the seventh to key its second victory over the Redhawks.
SEMO managed to pull to within a run (3-2) on a two-RBI triple by
Sarah Messex in the bottom of the third inning, but that was as close as it would get.
The Wildcats followed with eight unanswered runs after that.
Kentucky had 12 hits in the contest.
Madeline Krumrey (4-2) suffered the loss. Krumrey gave up seven runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked two in four innings.
Autumn Humes picked up the win. Humes worked four innings allowing two runs on four hits. Erin Rethlake also recorded six strikeouts in three shutout innings.
Ashley Ellis led the Redhawks with two hits.
SEMO returns to action when it travels to Creighton for a three-game series on Mar. 9-10.
