CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (19-11, 3-1) had two big home runs and used another strong pitching performance from senior ace
Madeline Krumrey to split a doubleheader with defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion Jacksonville State (14-16, 3-1) Sunday. The Redhawks dropped game one, 6-0, but won the nightcap 7-2.
SEMO trailed, 2-0, entering the bottom of the fourth inning of game two when it hit a pair of doubles and two home runs to take the lead.
Abby Tillotson walked and went to third on a double by
Addison Barnouski. After
Ashley Ellis struck out,
Sarah Messex blasted a three-run home run to left field.
Riley Hayes then doubled to left field. Pinch-hitter
Claudia Gallo stepped in next and clobbered Nicole Rodriguez's first offering over the wall in right center giving the Redhawks a 5-2 advantage. For Gallo, it was the first home run of her career.
SEMO polished off its win with a two-out, two-RBI single by
Parker Bandy in the bottom of the sixth.
Krumrey (10-3) picked up her 10
th win of the season after yet another solid outing. She went the distance, struck out seven and allowed just two runs. It was the seventh complete game of the season for Krumrey.
Rodriguez (1-1), a freshman, suffered her first loss. She allowed five runs on five hits, struck out two and walked two in 3.1 innings.
Bandy and Barnouski each had two hits to lead SEMO which finished with seven in the nightcap.
JSU scored in each of the first three innings en route to a 4-0 lead in game one.
Taylor Beshears and Hayley Sims each homered and were responsible for knocking in four of the Gamecocks six runs.
Faith Sims (9-7) struck out two and allowed three hits in her complete game shutout.
Haley Thogmartin (5-4) started inside the circle for SEMO and was charged with two runs on three hits in two innings.
Freshmen reliever
Rachel Rook recorded six strikeouts in four innings out of the bullpen.
The Redhawks had just three hits with Messex going 2-for-3 to lead the way.
SEMO snapped a 13-game losing streak in its all-time series against JSU. The Redhawks last beat the Gamecocks on Apr. 6, 2012 (3-1) in Cape Girardeau. The Redhawks, who improved to 5-1 at home this season, returns to OVC action at Eastern Illinois on Mar. 30.
