CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (16-10) hit four home runs and rallied behind a sharp pitching performance from senior
Madeline Krumrey to split a doubleheader with SEC member Missouri (18-15) Wednesday. The Redhawks dropped game one, 10-2, but bounced back to win the nightcap, 8-2.
SEMO beat Missouri for the first time in 18 years, snapping an 18-game losing streak in its all-time series against the Tigers.
The Redhawks put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning to key their game two victory.
Mykaela Arellanes,
Parker Bandy and
Abby Tillotson all walked. With one out and the bases loaded,
Addison Barnouski doubled down the right field line, scoring both Bandy and Arellanes.
Ashley Ellis then stepped in and hit a three-run home run deep over the right field wall. Ellis' team-high fifth round-tripper of the season gave Krumrey a 5-0 lead to work with.
Missouri had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the first, but came up empty after Krumrey caught Rylee Pierce looking on strikes.
Krumrey retired eight of nine hitters before the Tigers got on the board with a two-out RBI-double by Callie Martin in the top of the fourth.
Krumrey struck out the side in the fifth inning and Missouri scored its final run against her on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
SEMO, however, scored three more times via the long ball as
Sarah Messex launched a solo home run to straightaway center to start the bottom of the fourth and Arellanes crushed a two-out home run to right in the sixth to polish off the 8-2 win.
A native of Wildwood, Missouri, Krumrey improved to 8-3 this season and pitched her team-high fifth complete game. She gave up just two runs on four hits and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts.
Danielle Baumgartner (0-1) suffered the loss. Baumgartner lasted just one-third of an inning, giving up five runs, walking three and allowing two hits.
SEMO outhit Missouri, 8-4, with Arellanes going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the way.
The Redhawks trailed, 3-2, before the Tigers scored seven unanswered runs -- including five in the top of the fifth inning -- to take game one.
Madi Norman (7-2) was credited with the win. Norman struck out four and gave up four hits in four scoreless innings of relief.
Alexis Estes (3-1) fell to her first loss of the season.
Barnouski, Ellis and Bandy combined for the Redhawks three hits. Barnouski's solo home run made it a one-run game in the bottom of the second inning.
SEMO, which has won seven of its last eight games, hosts Tennessee Tech in its Ohio Valley Conference opener Saturday. The Redhawks and Golden Eagles will play a 1 p.m., CT, doubleheader.
