CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Senior pitcher
Madeline Krumrey went over 300 career strikeouts as Southeast Missouri (11-9) swept Indiana State (12-10), 5-1, 4-1, in a doubleheader Tuesday at the Southeast Softball Complex.
Krumrey, who tossed her team-high third complete game of the season in game one, improved to 5-3 this year. She caught ISU leadoff hitter Leslie Sims looking on strikes for her 300
th career strikeout in the fifth inning. Krumrey now ranks sixth all-time among the school's all-time career strikeout leaders with 303 Ks.
SEMO got ahead early when
Rachel Anderson smacked a two-out triple to right center and scored on an ensuing
Abby Tillotson double in the bottom of the first.
The Redhawks scored twice more in the second and tacked on another run in each of the third and sixth innings.
Addison Barnouski scored on a sacrifice fly by
Riley Hayes and
Parker Bandy touched home on a single by
Mykaela Arellanes in the second.
Barnouski delivered a RBI-double to knock in pinch-runner
Mackenzie Long in the third.
Then, SEMO capitalized on two ISU errors to tack on its final run in the sixth.
Krumrey gave up five hits and just one run in seven innings. She finished with five strikeouts and walked one.
Abbey Kruzel (2-3) took the loss. Kruzel gave up seven hits and four runs in only 2.1 innings.
The Redhawks had eight hits with Tillotson and Barnouski contributing two apiece. Hayes added two RBI.
SEMO fell behind, 1-0, in the top of the first inning of game two. That, however, was the only time the Redhawks trailed in the twin bill.
Arellanes quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first with a leadoff solo home run to right field, her first of the season. Anderson, who walked and stole second, later scored on an error to put the Redhawks ahead, 2-1.
Ashley Ellis ripped a two-out single to center to bring in Bandy in the third inning and
Sarah Messex scored when
Claire Wernig grounded out in the fourth to bury the Sycamores.
Haley Thogmartin (3-3) was strong inside the circle, throwing her first complete game of the season. Thogmartin allowed only one run on eight hits, struck out two and walked one. She retired eight-straight hitters between the second and fourth frames.
Kylie Stober (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Anderson went 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace SEMO in the nightcap. Ellis, Barnouski and Arellanes accounted for the other three hits.
SEMO wraps up its spring break with four games at the Memphis Tiger Classic this weekend.
