Redhawks Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at 2018 Tiger Classic Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After inclement weather cancelled all of Friday's 2018 Tiger Classic tournament games, Southeast Missouri women's softball (13-9) swept their pair of games over Tennessee Tech (8-16) and tournament host, Memphis (17-7), Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex.

Abby Tillotson provided the game-winning home run against TTU and Southeast utilized a five-run third inning to power past Memphis.

Southeast 7, Tennessee Tech 3

In their early 8 a.m. morning session with the Golden Eagles of the OVC, the Redhawks had to break a 3-3 stalemate en route to a 7-3 victory.

Southeast took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Addison Barnouski doubled to right, which brought Randi Dae Conway home on a TTU throwing error.

The Golden Eagles then jumped on the board in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. Bayli Cruse hit a fielder's choice to pitcher Rachel Rook and Taylor Thomas doubled to right to put runners on first and second. Ashley McGowan then added a base hit, which plated Cruse and Thomas.

SEMO quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the fourth, 3-2, on back-to-back hits from Sarah Messex and Ashley Ellis. Messex doubled in Parker Bandy and Ellis singled to short as Messex headed home on an error.

Tennessee Tech then evened the contest at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth. Rook was relieved for Alexis Estes to start the inning after she allowed two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in four innings of work.

Estes was only able to retire one TTU batter in relief as she was pulled for Haley Thogmartin with the bases loaded. Thogmartin limited the damage to one run as Cruse hit a sacrifice fly to left and a foul out ended the top half of the frame.

The tie game didn't last long as Abby Tillotson pulled the game back in Southeast's favor, 6-3, with a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth. Claudia Gallo and Rachel Anderson both earned walks prior to the home run to set the stage for Tillotson's fourth home run in 2018.

Southeast would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Gallo singled to left to score Ellis.

Thogmartin (4-3) earned the win as she allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of work. Leigh Ellen Thomas recorded the loss for Tennessee Tech as she allowed seven runs on six hits.

Southeast 8, Memphis 7

In the second game of Southeast's doubleheader, the Redhawks outlasted tournament host, Memphis, 8-7.

SEMO wasted no time in the contest, scratching across two runs in the top of the first. Mykaela Arellanes and Randi Dae Conway started the game with back-to-back hits and Rachel Anderson earned a walk to load the bases. Tillotson then laced a single through the left side for her fourth RBI of the day.

Conway then safely touched home on Parker Bandy's foul out to right.

The Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the first. Kyler Trosclair led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a single from Addison Maxwell.

Ashley Threatt then hit a two-run homer to left and Regan Hadley chipped in an RBI double.

Southeast answered back with a five-run third inning. With the bases full of Redhawks, Riley Hayes drew an RBI walk, which ended Mariah Nichols' day in the circle.

Madison Harris then entered as a pinch hitter to face Memphis pitcher Katie Brignac. Harris knocked a two-out RBI single to center, which brought Messex and Anderson across home plate.

Arellanes finished the top half of the frame with a two-run double over second base.

Hadley hit an RBI double to right for Memphis in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Hayes then earned her second RBI walk of the game to grow Southeast's lead to 8-5 in the fourth inning.

After a Memphis single and a SEMO error, Madeline Krumrey was relieved for Thogmartin in the bottom of the sixth. Krumrey earned the victory to improve her record to 6-3 on the campaign after allowing seven runs (six earned runs) on 10 hits over five innings of work with three strikeouts.

Thogmartin gave up an RBI double to Baylee Smith as Memphis cut Southeast's edge to 8-7 before retiring the next three Tigers' batters on a ground out, flyout and strikeout. She also kept Memphis at bay in the bottom of the seventh after scattering two singles.

Arellanes batted 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a double. Conway and Rachel Anderson each added two hits.

SEMO faces South Dakota at 8 a.m., CT on Sunday and then concludes the 2018 Tiger Classic with a 12:30 p.m. game against SIUE.
