CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (5-4) split a pair of games at the Chattanooga Frost Classic Saturday. The Redhawks shutout IUPUI, 7-0, and fell to host Chattanooga, 8-5.
Pitchers
Alexis Estes and
Haley Thogmartin combined on a five-hit shutout against IUPUI, SEMO's second of the tournament.
Estes, who improved to 3-0 this season, scattered three hits, struck out one and walked one in 4.2 innings. She also walked one in her third start.
Thogmartin, in her fifth relief appearance, allowed two hits, walked none and struck out two in the final 2.1 frames.
While Estes and Thogmartin set the tone inside the circle, SEMO's defense did not commit an error behind them and the offence gave the tandem plenty of run support.
The Redhawks got on the board in the top of the third inning, where
Claudia Gallo led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on an ensuing sacrifice fly by
Mykaela Arellanes.
Brooke Rheinecker reached on an error and touched home on a double by
Rachel Anderson.
Abby Tillotson followed with a two-run home run to right center, giving SEMO a 4-0 lead. For Tillotson, it was her first round-tripper of the season.
SEMO tacked on three more runs in the fourth.
Parker Bandy led things off with a walk and went to third on a single by Gallo. Gallo and Bandy later scored on an error. Tillotson then delivered a two-out single to score Rheinecker making it 7-0.
IUPUI, after stranding a combined three baserunners in the fifth and sixth innings, went down quietly during its final at-bat of the game.
The Redhawks tallied seven hits with five coming from the first four hitters in their lineup. Arellanes, Rheinecker and Anderson each had a hit, while Tillotson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. That part of the lineup also scored four runs. Gallo had the other two hits for SEMO.
SEMO led, 3-0, after three-and-a-half innings against Chattanooga before the Mocs used a grand slam and a three-run home run to get by the Redhawks.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth, pinch-hitter Ashley Conner hit a grand slam to Chattanooga a 4-3 edge.
The Redhawks regained a 5-4 advantage courtesy of solo home runs by Anderson and
Addison Barnouski. The long balls marked the first for both Anderson and Barnouski this year.
After tying the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hayleigh Weissenbach launched a three-run home run with one out in the sixth.
Celie Hudson (3-3) picked up the win in relief. Hudson allowed a hit and a walk in 2.1 scoreless innings.
Freshman
Rachel Rook (0-1) fell to her first loss of the season. Rook walked two, gave up two runs and allowed a hit in one inning.
Anderson went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and a walk to lead SEMO which recorded seven hits.
