CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (7-4) posted a pair of one-run victories to polish off a strong finish at the Chattanooga Frost Classic Sunday. The Redhawks beat Western Michigan, 9-8, and Western Illinois, 2-1.
SEMO completed the tournament with a 5-1 record following its Sunday sweep.
Ashley Ellis' walkoff home run sent the Redhawks to victory against WMU. Ellis led off the bottom of the seventh inning with her second home run of the game.
The Redhawks held a 5-1 lead through three innings after scoring once in the first and twice in both the second and third.
Rachel Anderson tripled home
Brooke Rheinecker with one out for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Abby Tillotson singled to lead things off in the second inning and went to second when Ellis walked.
Parker Bandy later doubled to score pinch-runner
Randi Dae Conway and
Sarah Messex touched home on a passed ball.
A two-run home run by
Addison Barnouski added to the Redhawks lead in the third inning. For Barnouski, it was her second round-tripper of the season.
Shortly after the Broncos took a 7-5 lead following back-to-back three-run innings, Ellis tied the game with a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Ellis finished at 2-for-3 with both the game-tying and game-winning home runs. She also scored twice and had three RBI.
Mykaela Arellanes and Tillotson also had two hits each.
SEMO collected 10 hits for its second double-digit hit game this year.
Haley Thogmartin (1-1) picked up her first win of the season. Thogmartin gave up two hits and a run in 3.1 innings of relief. She also struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Ellis' two-out RBI-single to center field in the top of the seventh inning was the difference in the Redhawks win over Western Illinois.
Rachel Anderson led off with a double to left center and came around to score on Ellis' hit.
SEMO trailed, 1-0, before tying the game two-out double by Arellanes in the sixth. Bandy came home to tie the game on Arellanes' extra base hit.
Madeline Krumrey (3-1) went the distance, allowing just one run on three hits. Krumrey struck out two and walked one, as well.
Emily Ira (1-4) suffered the loss. Ira struck out nine in 6.2 innings and gave up two runs on five hits.
Five different Redhawks had a hit against the Leathernecks.
Defensively, SEMO went each of its last five games of the tournament without committing an error.
The Redhawks return to action at the Kentucky John Cropp Classic on Mar. 3-4.
