CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Kailee Smith's two-out RBI-double in the top of the fourth inning gave Drake University (4-0) a 1-0 win over Southeast Missouri (2-3) in the final day of the Northern Iowa Dome Classic Sunday.
After a scoreless three innings for both teams, Kelsey Wright singles following back-to-back strikeouts in the fourth. Smith stepped in and doubled home Wright on a 2-2 count for the game's decisive run.
The Redhawks had a runner in scoring position when freshman
Kaylee Anderson delivered a one-out pinch-hit single. However,
Sarah Messex and
Riley Hayes grounded out.
Nicole Smith (2-0) gave up only two hits, recorded 10 strikeouts and did not allow a walk in four innings to pick up her second win of the season. Smith was credited with her first save after striking out three and walking none in three frames.
Five different players had a hit for the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, SEMO tallied four hits, all of which were singles.
Brooke Rheinecker went 2-for-2 at the bottom of the Redhawks order.
Abby Tillotson and Anderson posted the other hits.
Rachel Rook (0-1) fell to her first loss of the season. Rook struck out five and gave up four hits in four innings, three of which were scoreless. She was charged with the only run of the contest.
Reliever
Haley Thogmartin struck out one and allowed only one hit in the final three innings.
SEMO returns to action at the Chattanooga Frost Classic on Feb. 23-25.
