Day One Of Championship Weekend Draws To Close

OXFORD, Ala. – Southeast Missouri's track & field teams wrapped out the opening day of competition of the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Choccolocco Park.
After five events in the men's decathlon, Nick South currently is in second with 3313 points. He set a season best time of 11.41 in the 100m during the event while setting new personal records in long jump (21' 1.25"; 6.43m), high jump (6' 2"; 1.88m) and the 400m (52.07). Ty Crowden currently is fifth in the event with 2790 points.
Kayla Gutierrez had a top hammer throw mark of 167' 9.75" (51.14m) to take fifth in her lone event of the evening, earning four points for the Redhawk women. Jessenia Ellis recorded a mark of 139' 11.75 (42.66m) in the event.
Stephen Zagurski earned the first medal of the weekend for the Redhawks, claiming bronze in the hammer throw with a top toss of 183' 7" (55.95m). Logan Blomquist also successfully recorded points for SEMO in the event, placing sixth at 172' .75" (52.44m).
Sydney O'Brien followed shortly after with time of 37:24.44 in the 10,000m run to earn Southeast's first gold medal of the Championships. Kaitlyn Shea finished slightly behind O'Brien in second, earning silver at 37:32.14. Rachel Hutchcraft also clocked a time of 38:43.47 in the event. On the men's end, Nathan Cook had a time of 35:35.11.
After day one, the Redhawk women's team leads the pack with 22 points while the men are in fourth with nine points.
Continuation of the decathlon will open tomorrow's competition at 9 a.m. Non-multi events will resume at 1 p.m. with both men's long jump and women's high jump.
